A former UFC lightweight champion, “Smooth” Benson Henderson (23-5) improved his record in the welterweight division to 2-0 Saturday night when he outpointed Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal (29-10) by split decision in the “UFC Fight Night” main event. This main card from Seoul, South Korea was only available to view on UFC Fight Pass.
Masvidal was a late fill-in for Thiago Alves, who suffered a broken rib. Had that not happened, Masvidal would have fought Dong “Stun Gun” Hyun Kim. One judge scored the featured fight 48-47 in Masvidal’s favor, while the other two gave it to Henderson 48-47 and 49-46.
As it was, Hyun Kim (21-3-1, 1 NC) beat Dominic Waters by TKO at 3:11 of the first round. Both of those fights were in the welterweight division.
In the other close call of the evening amongst the welterweights, Alberto Mina took a split decision over Yoshihiro Akiyama with all three judges writing down 29-28 scorecards. Also, in featherweight action, Doo “The Korean Superboy” Ho Choi (13-1) unleashed a TKO of Sam Sicilia (15-6) in 1:33 to earn a Performance of the Night bonus.
