In the spirit of the holidays, helping families in need is not only a great way to directly impact others, but it is also an act that can teach children compassion, empathy and generosity. Family-to-Family, the national non-profit hunger and poverty relief organization, offers its Holiday Giving Programs to those families wishing to connect with other families who are struggling.
Donors can participate in four different Family-to-Family Holiday Giving Programs. Each one encourages kids with “more” to think about giving, rather than getting gifts this season. Family-to-Family’s mantra is “Share Your Bounty!” because one small gesture from one family can equate to a big difference to another family in need.
Give It Up For Kids In Need!! – This program involves encouraging kids to forego an item on their wish list to instead shop for another child who may not otherwise receive a present this holiday. When the gift is purchased, Family-to-Family will provide the donor family with information on a local shelter to drop off the gift.
Calendar of Giving – While the holidays are peak gift-giving season, families in need can use help throughout the year. The Calendar of Giving provides donor families with month-to-month recommendations on how to help. The downloadable 12 month calendar provides easy instructions for each project. Examples of monthly projects include programs such as One Book at a Time, Pajama Drive, Birthday Giving Parties, Seeds for Change, All Dolled Up, Best Dressed Babes, Closet for Good, and more.
Compassionate Gift Alternatives – This compassionate and meaningful program offers alternatives to gifts. Donors choosing the “Wherever the Need is Greatest” option can select any amount to provide financial relief in the name of a chosen recipient. Another option is “Hunger Hurts” which provides enough groceries for seven meals a month for 12 months to a family with four to six members. “Birthday Party in a Box” will give a birthday child the supplies necessary to throw a special birthday party. The last option is the “Victory Garden Kit” that provides one family the means to grow and produce fresh produce and eggs.
Stuff a Stocking! –
Many kids in need go through Christmas without toys in their stockings. This program allows donors to provide stockings that they stuff themselves. The organization can then locate a local shelter for donors to bring the stockings to. Make it fun and have a Stuff s Stocking party to get friends and family involved. Donors can stuff stockings for both children and adults.
