In celebration of the longest night of 2015, West Woods Nature Center in Novelty, Ohio is holding its free Winter Solstice Candlelight Walk event on Monday, December 21 from 7:30 p.m. – 9 :30 p.m. Novelty is approximately a 40 minute drive from Cleveland.
This indoor-outdoor interactive event features activities that will be a real treat for visitors of all ages who are holiday and outdoor enthusiasts in addition to those who are history buffs. Indoor activities at the West Woods Nature Center include a performance by the Pilgrim Brass Choir and a holiday music singalong. Refreshments include hot cider. Outdoors, visitors will be able to follow a candlelit route through the forest (accompanied by a Nature Center volunteer) where they will encounter educational and entertaining stations that explore the roots of modern holiday celebrations and highlight different civilizations and how the winter solstice was culturally observed.
Some of the possible civilizations spotlighted are the Druids (and the origin of mistletoe and holly), the Romans and Vikings and there will be information on traditional holiday symbols like the Christmas tree and the yule log. Make sure you dress appropriately for the weather as a good portion of the evening’s events take place outdoors. Be aware that the Nature Center is wheelchair and stroller accessible but the trail is not.
Hours for the Winter Solstice event are 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m with the last group departing at 9 p.m. Admission is free and parking is free.
