Thanksgiving just wouldn’t be the same without turkey. According to the National Turkey Federation, nearly eighty-eight percent of Americans surveyed eat turkey each year at Thanksgiving. Side dishes vary from family to family, but there is no doubt that turkey (or a tofu turkey if your family is vegetarian!) is included on the holiday menu.
In fact, your family, like many families, may prepare such a large turkey that there are leftovers for lunch and dinner long after Thanksgiving ends. If you know your family gets bored with eating the same meal of sliced turkey smothered with gravy day after day, consider revamping your leftover turkey for a completely different meal with a bit of a Mexican flair.
A turkey taco bar is not only easy and tasty but each family member can customize their own taco bowl to his or her own liking. Taco shell bowls and a variety of toppings are pretty much all you will need to create your family taco bar. Bon appetit!
Turkey Taco Bowl Bar
This recipe is ideal for a family of four. Each family member will receive three taco boats to customize. Whether your family is small or large, you can adapt the amount of ingredients in the recipe according to your family’s size. Also, consider a turkey taco bowl bar to feed your kid’s friends if they come over anytime for a play date during Thanksgiving weekend.
Precaution: Some ingredients can pose choking hazards for young children! The National Children’s Hospital advises parents to take extra safety measures with certain foods. According to the National Children’s Hospital, “If children are under the age of four, parents should take extra caution when feeding their children or either avoid feeding them typical choking hazard foods such as chucks of meat or cheese and raw vegetables all together.”
- Turkey, 2 pounds, shredded or chopped
- Taco seasoning, 2 packets
- Taco boats (Ex. 12-count Old Paso Mini Soft Tortilla Boats)
- Cranberry salsa, 1 jar (ideal for turkey tacos!)
- Cheddar cheese, shredded, 8 ounces
- Rice and Beans, 4 cups, cooked
- Lettuce, shredded
- Tomatoes, diced
- White Onion, chopped
- Sour Cream
- Optional toppings: Corn, Avocado, etc.
Mix together turkey and taco seasoning. Follow instructions on taco seasoning packets. Warm taco bowls according to the package’s instructions. Place all ingredients in small individual bowls with a spoon or fork. Create an assembly line of bowls on a table. Situate the bowls in the same way you would dress a taco. For example, chopped turkey first, rice and beans second, lettuce and tomatoes third and so on. Provide each family member with their own taco bowl and have them go down the line to select their toppings of choice.
Instead of taco bowls, consider using tortilla chips. Use the same ingredients above to create a turkey “Nacho” bar for your family. In addition to the ingredients, heat nacho cheese sauce for everyone to drizzle on their nachos. Place chopped scallions and bacon bits in a bowl for each person to sprinkle on top their nachos.
