When you think of a perfect weekend if what comes to mind is you surrounded by culinary delights that you can sample and watching cooking demonstrations where you can learn more about the culinary arts then you must pack your bags and head for Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan for their special Fall Flavor Weekends being held Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27 and Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4. It is approximately a 2.5 hour drive from Cleveland.
Located at The Henry Ford Museum complex, historic Greenfield Village is playing host to Fall Flavor Weekends featuring daily cooking demonstrations at the family homes, farmhouses and the plantation within the Village. Among some of the foods you will see being prepared at the Firestone Farm during the two weekends include ham noodles, apple and onions with Southern cabbage and Irish potatoes. The Susquehanna Plantation will have crab gumbo, sauerkraut baked with apples, ginger biscuits and cherry pudding. Other foods to please your palate will be prepared at various other historic buildings within the Village.
Visitors will also be able to watch demonstrations of the threshing of wheat (by a a 1904 threshing machine powered by a Port Huron steam engine) at the Firestone Farm field, watch plowing by steam and by horses and even take apple orchard tours. The weekends will also feature free tastings of the savory foods being cooked throughout the Village and Local Roots food products (at the Village Store), food talks and other traditional Fall cooking demonstrations. Visitors will also be able to take home free recipe cards. There will also be an open-air Farmer’s Market on Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. with lots of fresh produce, baking mixes, honey, apples and pumpkins among the items available for purchase.
Hours for Greenfield Village are 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., Admission to Fall Flavor Weekends is free with regular admission to Greenfield Village which is $25 for adults, $22.50 for seniors (62+) and $18.75 for youth (5-12). Children 4 and under are free. Parking is $6 per vehicle. Admission and parking are free for members.
