For those looking for luxury and history in their travels this summer, consider the stunning Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como, Italy.
Originally built in 1910 by Enea Gandola, a gentleman from Bellagio who traveled the world with his wife Maria Orsolini, the hotel opened with a party and what followed until the outbreak of the First World War was great splendor.
For more than a year during World War I, the hotel was requisitioned for use as a military hospital. In the 1930s, Grand Hotel Tremezzo was bought by the Sampietro family and was seen in the spotlight in the 1932 film “Grand Hotel,’’ ’where actress Greta Garbo refers to the hotel as a “happy, sunny place.’’ It was bought by the Como-based De Santis family in 1975, who still carry forward the Grand Hotel Tremezzo tradition of charm and authentic Italian hospitality.
The Grand Hotel Tremezzo features 76 rooms and 14 suites, each with views of Bellagio, the Riviera delle Azalee, or the flower gardens and park; a century-old park and garden; five restaurants led by celebrated Italian Chef Gualtiero Marchesi; three swimming pools; and T Spa offering treatments from ESPA.
In addition, seven of Italy’s top golf courses are just a short distance from the hotel.
