Graham’s Chocolates mother ship in Geneva, Illinois and its second location in Wheaton, Illinois are combining forces with some pretty powerful organizations in order to fundraise for a special cause. Thus, on Sunday, August 16th, Graham’s will be hosting a 5K Run/Walk which will help the City of Hope, Chicago, to salute their partner, Mikey Wunderlich Foundation, whose good works are supporting Dr. Karen Aboody with her stem cell research. If all works the way it is intended, they will be one step closer to ultimately putting an end to Cervical Cancer.
Graham’s Sundae 5K Run (3.1 miles) and walk will not only donate a portion of the proceeds to The Mikey Wunderlich Foundation for City of Hope, but will provide participants with an Ice Cream Social at the Finish Line! In order to participate, each person must pay their $35 fee.
The fee includes a race t-shirt and the Ice Cream Sundaes that will be available at the end of the race. Those wishing to participate will register at the Graham’s website www.grahamschocolate.com through Thursday, August 13th by 2:30 p.m. Participants can pick up their packet on Friday, August 14th and Saturday, August 15th at The Geneva store located at 302 South 3rd Street in Geneva. Pickup on both days is scheduled between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. You will need your registration confirmation in order to pick up your own packet or a packet for someone else. Packets will NOT be available on race day!
The Race is scheduled to begin and end at Gunnar Anderson Forest Preserve. The Preserve is located along the Fox River behind the Kane County Building. The race will begin at 8:00 a.m. CST. Participants are invited to park in area public parking lots.
T-shirts will be provided to both runners and walkers. Those that participate will want to exercise hard so that they can add lots of the yummy toppings to their sundae after the race.
Awards will be granted to the top overall Male and Female finishers. The top three male and female finishers of each age group will also be awarded. Groups include: 19 & Under; 20-29-year-olds; 30-39-year-olds; 40-49-year-olds; 50-59-year-olds; 60-69-year-olds; 70-79-year-olds; 80 & over.
Graham’s has gotten involved with this great fundraiser and agreed to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Mikey Wunderlich Foundation because they have a personal connection to the issue. Mikey Wunderlich is Jayni Wunderlich’s mother-in-law and the daughter of Robert and Beckie Untiedt.
Mikey lost her battle with cervical cancer in February, 2011. She was a loving daughter, sister and mother who always maintained a positive outlook on life. She had the most fun being active outdoors with her family and friends and running was her passion. Thus, just a few months prior to her passing, she got rid of her wheelchair and walked an entire 5K. Mikey never gave up her passions, including her love for all things Graham’s!
The Mikey Wunderlich Foundation (http://formikey.org) is currently raising money to benefit the City of Hope (www.cityofhope.org), one of 41 comprehensive cancer centers, with the highest designation bestowed by the National Cancer Institute for excellence in cancer treatment, research, prevention and education. Numerous breakthrough cancer drugs, including Perception, Rituxan and Avastin are based on technology pioneered by City of Hope and are saving lives worldwide.
Please sign up to run and help Graham’s Chocolates spread the word about cancer prevention and early detection!
