Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced his plan to strip state grant funding from county sheriff’s with a Sanctuary City policy of not honoring ICE detainers. according to a recent article in Breitbart News. Abbott’s announcement came only days before he will make an appearance in Wichita Falls, Texas on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Abbott, who was born on Randel Drive in Wichita Falls, will appear at a Boy Scout function to honor two Boy Scouts who have carved out outstanding lives at MPEC. Abbott is expected to make other appearances Tuesday while in the city only a stone’s throw from the Red River.
Abbott’s visit to this city of 105,000 comes in the wake of his stern letter to Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez. His letter to Valdez was a response to her order that criminal illegal aliens in her jail will be evaluated on a case by case basis to determine if ICE detainers will be enforced. In his letter to Valdez Abbott informed her he would consider presenting a bill to the Texas Legislature which would amend the Texas Torts Claims Act to allow liability for cities who disobey ICE detainers for illegal immigrants. But that letter was only the governor’s first shot across the bow of the sanctuary city movement.
Abbott followed that letter up with the following: “I am establishing new standards for Sheriff’s Departments that seek grants from the Governor’s Criminal Justice Division (CJD). Beginning now, all CJD grant awards will require that Sheriff’s Departments fully honor ICE’s detention requests for criminal immigrants. Any applicant that cannot certify that their office will honor all ICE detainers for criminal immigrants will be ineligible for CJD funding. Further, any applicant that certifies full compliance with ICE detainer requests….but subsequently fails to honor an ICE detainer…will be subject to clawback provision and must refund the full amount of their CJD grant award.”
Abbott’s strong actions have come in the wake of Dallas County Sheriff Valdez’s order to no longer honor all ICE detentions. The sanctuary city issue is also making news in California. Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi of San Francisco lost his re-election bid Tuesday based largely on his pro-sanctuary city policies. He was the sheriff who ordered the release of the illegal immigrant in the City by the Bay who later gunned down 32-year old Kate Steinle as she strolled along the Embarcadero with her father, according to Twitchy.
The Steinle murder at Pier 14 on July 1 in San Francisco brought the sanctuary city issue to the national media’s attention. The alleged killer Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, had been released from jail without notifying federal authorities who wanted to deport him for the sixth time. Steinle’s parents blamed the sanctuary city policies promoted by Sheriff Mirkarimi for the death of their daughter. Indeed, Lopez-Sanchez admitted he did the shooting while in custody in a jailhouse interview with KGO-TV News. He also stated he kept returning to San Francisco because of its lenient sanctuary city policy.
What is the sanctuary city policy?
If is a policy which provides sanctuary for illegal immigrants in certain cities in the United States including San Francisco. It is also a policy which provides no sanctuary whatsoever for American citizens who are in the U.S. legally and may become targets of dangerous illegal aliens. Sheriff Valdez might want to consider Sheriff Mirkarimi’s fate in San Francisco as she tries to implement her sanctuary city policies in Dallas. Governor Abbott is to be applauded for his attempts to stop the spread of sanctuary cities to Texas.
One wonders how many U.S. citizens will have their blood shed on the sidewalks of America before sheriffs like Valdez and other politicians will do something. The murder of Kate Steinle should be enough to get their attention. Evidently it is not. Mirkarimi was voted out of office because of his pro-sanctuary city stance in San Francisco. Abbott seems to be the only high profile statesman in the country willing to fight against the sanctuary city disease.
