Jeff Gordon will lead the field for today’s Geico 500 at Talledega after winning his 3rd pole of the season with a speed of 194,793 mph. In fact, he and fellow Hendrick Motor teammates, Kasey Kahne, Dale Earnhart Jr and Jimmie Johnson showed their superiority during the modified multi-car qualifyer by nabbing 4 out of the top 5 starting positions, with only Wood Brother Racing’s Ryan Blaney splitting them to take 3rd.
“We definitely have a fast Chevrolet,” Gordon said. “I think we’ve shown that all weekend long. But you never know what you’ve got until you put it on the clock.”
This is Gordon’s 3rd pole for 2015, including the Daytona 500 season opener. Rounding out the top 10 qualifiers for today’s event are Tony Stewart (6), Paul Menard (7), Matt Kenseth (8), David Ragan (9) and Clint Bowyer (10). In the meantime, the winner of yesterday’s Winn Dixie 300 Xfinity race at Talladega, Joey Logano, will start in the 21st position.
Logano’s win was his 3rd Xfinity race of the season. Although he led for a race-high of 40 laps, the victory did not come easily s he and Rousch’s Elliot Sadler got into an intense duel as they raced toward the checkered flag.
Logano had the lead on the restart, with just 8 laps to go, when Sadler “hooked to his bumper” and began pushing him around as Chris Buescher came up to lead the traffic mounting on the outside line to challenge Joey. The crowd left Sadler with no room to pass and he eventually faded back as Brian Scott came on strong to nab 2nd, followed by Richard Childress Racing driver Austin Dillon to complete the podium. JJ Yeley of ended up 4th in his. No. 28 car for JGL Racing., while Jimmy Mrans Racing’s 21-year old Joey Gase (who started 39th) claimed his 1st top-10 finish after 84 starts to take the 5th spot. In fact, this was the first time in his career that he finished better than 25th this season.
