Driver shoots family: Stranded motorist offs family who stopped to assist him
Jason Shane, 52, and his wife Tana Shane, 50, were shot and killed by 18-year-old Jesus Deniz Mendoza. The couple, along with their 24-year-old daughter Jora, returned to where Mendoza was with a can of gas in order to help. It’s unclear if the vehicle Mendoza was using actually ran out of gas or if he was using the situation as a ruse to lure victims.
According to investigators, Tana drove by Mendoza and either realized he had ran out of gas or had a brief discussion with the teen. Tana then drove to her daughter’s home, and returned with Jora and her husband Jason to render assistance.
CNN picks up the story:
Mendoza pulled a gun on them and ordered them out of their car. He demanded money, but the family said it didn’t have any, according to the FBI. The daughter said Mendoza told them to start walking away from the car. She heard a gunshot and turned back to see her father lying on the road. The woman heard another gunshot and heard her mother scream. She was running and didn’t look back, the document says.
Mendoza then took off in the daughter’s car. He was apprehended shortly afterward Deniz and taken into custody. He is currently being held at the Park County Detention Center.
According to the criminal complaint, Mendoza told FBI agents he “shot the victims because he was getting tired of waiting around, and because the daughter laughed at him.”
