The 2015 PGA Championship golf major tournament is taking place this week from August 13-16, 2015, on the Straits Course at Whistling Straits a links style golf course located along the shores of Lake Michigan in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Here is a list of the prize money up for grabs for the golfers at the 2015 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.
Walter Hagen (1921, 1924-27) and Jack Nicklaus (1963, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1980) jointly hold the record for most wins in the PGA Championship with four each. Tiger Woods is alone in second place with four PGA Championships (1999, 2000, 2006, 2007), while Gene Sarazen (1922, 1923, 1933) and Sam Snead (1942, 1949, 1951) are tied for third with three wins each.
The 2015 PGA Championship should be a great tournament as it looks like last year’s winner Rory McIlroy is good to go this year after recovering from a ruptured ligament in his ankle. He will be joined by Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Zach Johnson, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia and all the biggest stars in golf today. Jordan Spieth is the betting favorite to win the PGA Championship this week.
The total prize money up for grabs at the 2015 PGA Championship is $10 million. The same amount of money as last year and tied for the richest purse in golf with The Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open and The Players Championship in 2015. Winning the 2015 PGA Championship will do wonders for the bank account of this year’s champion as you can see below. The winner’s share below is set in stone while the other amounts can vary a little based upon ties and how many players make the cut.
- Winner – $1.8 million
The winner of the 2015 PGA Championship will earn a very cool $1.8 million. That is the same amount of prize money earned by Rory McIlroy when he won the PGA Championship last year. It’s also the same amount of money that Jordan Spieth earned when he won the 2015 Masters and the same amount he won for winning the 2015 U.S. Open. Zach Johnson also earned just about $1.8 million for winning the 2015 British Open.
- Second place – $1.08
Second place at the 2015 PGA Championship is worth $1.08 million. That is the same amount of money Phil Mickelson earned when he finished in second place last year. In his career, Phil Mickelson has won five majors and finished in second place 10 times at major tournaments. That includes Mickelson’s record six second place finishes at the U.S. Open. Only Jack Nicklaus with 19 has had more second place finishes in major golf tournaments.
- Third place – $680,000
Third place is worth $680,000 at the 2015 PGA Championship. Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson split $1.16 million with each player earning $680,000 when they tied for third place last year. Both Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson are looking for the first major wins of their golfing careers at the 2015 PGA Championship.
- Fourth place – $480,000
Fourth place at the 2015 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits is worth $480,000. Rickie Fowler has won just two tournaments in 147 PGA starts in his career but still has earnings of just under $19 million at age 26. Henrik Stenson has won four times in 138 PGA starts in his career. Stenson has career earnings of $18.5 million on the PGA Tour and plenty more money he has earned on the European Tour.
- Fifth place – $400,000
Fifth place is worth $400,000 at the 2015 PGA Championship. Jim Furyk and Ryan Palmer split $735,000 with each player earning $367,500 when they tied for fifth place last year.
