Southern California sweetheart and recently engaged Colbie Caillat started her summer tour at the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar, CA. The tour aptly named, Girls Night Out, Boys Can Come Too, also includes dates with Christina Perri and relative newcomer Rachel Platten.
The fair date was only Colbie and her band, but she put on a a great show and proved once again why she has two Grammys and multiple other awards on her mantle at home in Malibu, CA.
Colbie not only has a beautiful voice and is a multi-instrumentalist, she is above all an amazing songwriter. She is capable of writing upbeat, fun love songs like her hit, “Bubbly” and then turning around and writing songs like her latest single, “Try”. Try provides a strong message for women everywhere. The song is about what women do to themselves to be liked by others, when they may not even like themselves that much. The message is, don’t worry about if others like you, you just need to like yourself. A very important message, especially in this day and age of social media and selfies.
The audience at the fair was predominantly women, but not just young women. It seems that Miss Caillat draws women of all generations. I saw mothers with daughters, and groups of teens, middle-aged women having a “girls night out” and of course there were boys too. Fathers, husbands and boyfriends were all there. Some willingly some maybe just tagged along for the fair food.
It didn’t matter why they were there or who they were with the crowd was enthusiastic and sang along throughout the show. Unfortunately, fair policy does not allow the audience to stand during the show. I suppose this is so everyone can see, but the stage was so high I think even if someone was standing up you could still see.
All in all it was a great show. Colbie smiles and interacts with the audience as if they are all personal friends of hers. You can tell she is happy with her life right now. It comes across on the stage.
Her recent engagement to long time boyfriend and song writing partner Hawaiian singer-songwriter, Justin Young has obviously added to that happiness.
This summer looks to be a great time to see Colbie Caillat as she hits the road with equally talented singer-songwriters, Christina Perri and Rachel Platten. If they are coming to your neck of the woods I would highly recommend checking them out.
