A 6-year-old girl was shot to death Saturday morning in an apartment in southeast Atlanta, and police believe the one who accidentally shot her was her father. But many questions remain about what happened.
The incident occurred around 11:10 a.m. at 1041 Martin St., about a mile southeast of Turner Field, according to Atlanta police. Officers responded to the home to find the wounded child who died at the scene, police spokesman Sgt. Warren Pickard said.
So far, no details have been released on what happened inside the home, but investigators are treating the incident as an accidental shooting until an autopsy on the child is completed Sunday, Pickard said.
The father, whose name has not yet been released, initially left the scene, according to Channel 2 Action News. However, he returned and was speaking with detectives Saturday afternoon, police said. Police have not released any details on what the man said, but so far no charges have been filed.
It’s unclear who called police to report the shooting, but police said others were inside the home. Investigators are still trying to determine what role they played. So far, no details have been released on where on the body the child was shot or where in the home the shooting occurred. It’s also unclear what type of gun was used and what led to the shooting. The child’s name has also been withheld.
