Francis Xavier: Do you think of yourself as a confessional artist? If so, do you feel that in being confessional you have to explain the process behind your work more?
Gin Wigmore: To be honest I haven’t thought about wether I am a confessional artist or not. However, I would say that I consciously write music from a personally affecting state, so in that respect I would say that I am a confessional artist. I have to have lived through the thought, emotion or experience to honestly depict whatever I write and play. That is something I will always do and I really enjoy seeing how brutally honest I can be with myself. I truly believe that is the ultimate goal as a human being. To be fully self aware so that you can lead with compassion and understanding for yourself and the people around you.
FX: What did you learn about yourself as an artist while recording/producing Blood to Bone?
GW: That I was finally capable of taking on such a huge role in my own art. I felt confident and competent enough to bring together all the moving parts that go into making an album.
FX: Which of the songs on Blood to Bone was the hardest to write?
GW: Lyrically, I would say ‘Black Parade’ was a really tough song to write. I think because I was in a pretty dark place when I was writing that particular song it became difficult to navigate the words to accompany what I was feeling. Often when I get really down I almost take on a state of hopelessness which means lyrics are hard to come by as nothing feels good enough to settle on. After a while the words for this song almost helped get me out of the slump that I was in as I felt the words that accompanied my feelings were on point. That taste of alignment between feelings, words and music is sometimes all you need to snap you out of anything.
FX: On Blood To Bone you collaborated with various songwriters including Charlie Andrew and Joakim Ahlud; how would you describe a successful collaboration and what did you learn from collaborating on this project?
GW: I think the best scenario for a collaboration is when you ultimately vibe on what each other are about musically. With that comes respect, and with respect means you trust each others opinions and ideas about how you should write a song. From there it’s just about chipping away and sticking with it and letting the song unfold naturally into whatever it wants to be. I think what I learnt most from the collaborations I partook in when working on ‘Blood To Bone’ was that writing from a beat as opposed to structured chords can offer a huge amount of freedom when it comes to writing different melodies and songs far removed from my usual comfort zone.
FX: Your music combines many different sounds and layers; does the initial thread of a song ever get lost or become something you didn’t expect at the beginning?
GW: Songs always evolve dramatically from a beginning idea to the final outcome that appears on an album, but I think that is the whole hard task of a producer is to figure out how to retain the essence of what made a song in it’s primitive stage so special and keeping that still alive in the final product.
FX: Are the songs on Blood to Bone connected in any way?
GW: All of the songs on Blood To Bone are connected in some way or another. The way I laid out the track listing is done in a way where it chronologically tells the story of the last 2 years of my life. Opening with New Rush which was the catalyst for a huge amount of change and really opened the idea up for me to even thing about making another album. So yeah, each song kind of flows into the next in the timeline of what was going on from the beginning to the present, which is a state of peace and contentment.
FX: What is the most challenging part of the recording process?
GW: Knowing when to stop adding layers in order to leave space in a song for it to breathe and be truly heard the way it should be.
FX: Who are some bands/musicians that have inspired/influenced your sound?
GW: I am constantly influenced by all kinds of music. Growing up listening to my parents eclectic record collection has taught me the benefit of being a positive music listener. You can find gems and inspiration across a wide variety of genres if you listen positively and avoid predetermined judgements about something. With that said, I was heavily influenced by Kanye West’s album, 808’s & Heartbreak and Portishead when writing “Blood To Bone”. But right now it’s Foals, Band of Skulls and Antony & The Johnsons on high rotation for me.
