Spoiled Aug. 29, 2015 during Pax Prime in Seattle, Wash., Gideon, Ally of Zendikar is the newest card to be spoiled from Wizards of the Coast’s upcoming expert Magic: The Gathering expansion set Battle for Zendikar. This powerful mythic rare planeswalker gives both white beatdown and control strategies a powerful boost. Let’s take a look:
Gideon, Ally of Zendikar – 2WW
Planeswalker – Gideon (Mythic Rare)
+1 Loyalty: Until end of turn, Gideon, Ally of Zendikar becomes a 5/5 Human Soldier Ally creature with indestructible that’s still a planeswalker. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to him this turn.
+0 Loyalty: Put a 2/2 white Knight Ally creature token onto the battlefield.
-4 Loyalty: You get an emblem with “Creature you control get +1/+1.”
Starting Loyalty of 4
Unlike Kytheon, Hero of Akros you won’t need to transform Gideon, Ally of Zendikar in order to use his abilities right away. While Gideon, Ally of Zendikar can’t grow rapidly in loyalty like Gideon, Champion of Justice or force your opponent’s creatures to attack him directly like Gideon Jura, it can create a small army of creature tokens. Elspeth, Sun’s Champion made three 1/1 white Soldier creature tokens and saw play in both aggressive and control decks. Gideon, Ally of Zendikar only creates one 2/2 Knight Ally creature. A 2/2 is more effective than a 1/1 in combat, and in an Ally deck you’ll receive additional boons when this token creature enters the battlefield. Let’s not forget that Gideon, Ally of Zendikar himself can attack. Combined with the low casting cost of four, these factors lend Gideon, Ally of Zendikar to see play in a control deck running mass removal spells.
Comparing Gideon, Ally of Zendikar to Sorin, Solemn Visitor or Sorin, Lord of Innistrad seems more appropriate. Those two versions of that popular planeswalker both cost four mana and produce token creatures. The advantage here is that you only need to be playing one color. One of the most underestimated abilities of any Gideon we’ve seen to date is that he can transform into a creature and attack. Although Gideon, Ally of Zendikar cannot attack immediately like Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker it’s still a powerful effect that can often end the game by itself.
