Ghost Tours of Harper Ferry, by O’ Be JoyFull is among one of the highest-rated ghost tour destination in America, according to Trip Advisor. While these touring ventures are offered year-round, the scene really comes alive even more so around the Halloween season.
These tours are both family-friendly as well as dog-friendly, with a wide fan base ranging in age and multiple interests. No spooky contact, communication, or actively hunting out ghosts takes place on these benign tours, although guests are more than welcome to (and even encouraged to) take photos along the way.
The touring route follows stories that are based on the 1977 book A Ghostly Tour of Harper’s Ferry, by Shirley Dougherty. When Dougherty opened her restaurant The Iron Horse back in 1968, she soon started to experience a number of unexplainable ghostly phenomenon that prompted her to start seeking answers to the questions that plagued her about the building she was operating out of as well as the overall history of Harper’s Ferry in general, and how its past may be linked to the off events unfolding around her. In learning about her building’s own historical past, Dougherty also learned a lot about other buildings in the Lower Town section of Harper’s Ferry. She combined all the tales and history she began to lead nightly tours where she shared these stories and then later combined these stories into a published book.
Ghost Tours of Harper’s Ferry started around 1970 and remains strong today, making it the oldest ghost tour in the United States. In recent years O’ Be JoyFull Historical Tours and Entertainment acquired Ghost Tours of Harper’s Ferry, continuing to carry out the age-old tradition of leading visitors on knowledgeable, historical ventures.
