This week, SFJAZZ turns the Joe Henderson Lab over to four different groups in its dancefloor shows entitled Get Outta Your Seat! – Brass Magic, Joomanji, Con Brio and Dona Francisca.
Bay Area horns-and-drums band Brass Magic gets the ball rolling on Thursday, and although looking like your traditional New Orleans band, it’ll soon have you swinging with its combination of hip-hop, rock, R&B, soul, world music and electronic dance music. As the East Bay Express puts it, “Brass Magic doesn’t make toe-tapping music: It makes life-affirming, groovy party music”.
Brass Magic is in the Joe Henderson Lab on August 13 at 8.30 and 10.00 pm.
LA-based Joomanji brings its combination of live instruments and vocals to the Lab on Friday, with a blend of jazz, hip-hop and R&B. Described by Earmilk as “Smooth, jazzy, and rife with hip-hop inflections”, Joomanji has created quite a stir with its danceable live shows – its 2013 debut release, MANJ, reached the No 1 spot on Bandcamp’s Neo-Soul and Nu-Jazz Top 500 charts.
Joomanji appear in the Joe Henderson Lab on Friday, August 14, at 8.30 and 10.00pm.
Con Brio – fronted by charismatic singer Ziek McCarter – is said to be the most electrifying soul/funk/R&B band in the Bay Area. Living up to its Italian name – ‘con brio’ means ‘with spirit’ – the band has a reputation for constant experimentation, for striving for greater technical ability, and for pushing itself beyond what’s regarded as conventional. The East Bay Express describes Con Brio’s sound as “…. that of seasoned musicians balancing respect for technical composition with a healthy love of improvisation – and clearly having a blast with it”.
Join Con Brio in the Joe Henderson Lab on Saturday, August 15, at 8.30 and 10.00 pm.
The final Get Outta Your Seat! show comes from Dona Francisca, known as the Bay Area’s finest band dedicated to Brazilian forró – a style of music which originated in North-East Brazil. Using a combination of the triangle, accordion and zabumba (a large Brazilian drum), forró is known for delivering some of the most exhilarating dance music around, and Saturday’s performance is tipped to be an unforgettable experience which will have you on your feet from the first note.
The Joe Henderson Lab will swing to the sound of Dona Francisca on Sunday evening, August 16, at 8.30 and 10.00 pm.
