Thames & Hudson publishers love books. And some of their best are: Children’s reference books.
They have a series that is clever, instructive and very readable. One title, Eureka!: The Most Amazing Scientific Discoveries of All Time is by Dr. Mike Goldsmith. The photos and illustrations are numerous and varied in size and depiction making each chapter unique and fun to explore. There are snippets of information that add to the complexity of the subject matter—but by setting them off in small vignettes, they are highly readable and easy-to-remember.
The topics are well chosen. From Mapping the Body to Experiments in Space and Time, each subject examines the scientist who founded the most exciting discoveries of all time in the areas of: Medicine, Human Body, Matter and Energy, Planet Earth and The Universe.
If your child has to write a report or you just want to know more about Galileo, Louis Pasteur, Isaac Newton, Einstein and many others this is your book. Besides, how would you learn how to travel in time or make a rainbow?
Eureka!: The Most Amazing Scientific Discoveries of All Time by Dr. Mike Goldsmith, Thames & Hudson Ltd., 2014. $19.95 US/$22.95 CAN. ISBN: 978-0-500-65025=7.

Genius! The Most Astonishing Inventions of All Time by Deborah Kespert, is another title in this series. As it says on the cover, “Warning! Mind-blowing stories from history. Technology that rocked our world” — these are truisms. Another highly entertaining reference book, Genius explores such topics as: the arrival of the Internet (no, sorry, it wasn’t Al Gore); how Kevlar was born and manufactured, the advent of marvelous machines—thank you Archimedes—and more.
If you find your daughter’s knowledge of invention sketchy at best, or if your son needs some additional inspiration, this book is a dandy. Each entry outlines “The Big Idea” and the challenges it poses, provides background information; drawings, small graphics and wonderful depictions and photographs help to augment the content and illustrate important principles.
Grandparents will find these books great gift material (and will probably run through it themselves while trying to wrap it as a present, we bet).

We look forward to seeing a couple other titles in this series: Explore! And Splat!.
