Mr Robot airs Wednesday nights on USA at 10pm.
This week is a crazy tripfest that both moves the plot along and throws a HUGE monkey wrench into it. Spoilery spoilers below, as if you need to be told.
Angela is tired of Elliot not talking to her and asks him for help, but he’s convinced he can’t trust anyone, not even her, so he doesn’t tell her and bring her into the loop–which leaves her out in the cold with nowhere to turn for her own problems, which are closer and closer related to his. Also, Angela takes ballet with Darleen. More on that later.
Tyrell is cracking up big time about having killed his boss’s semi-cheating / totally-was-gonna-cheat wife, and hasn’t told his own wife. He gets all “we aren’t focusing on God” and then the cops show up to talk about it. His wife (Dana?) is super creepy, but you can’t say she’s not sharp; she figured out that Tyrell was the one who killed her without even so much as a blink and went in the kitchen and stabbed herself to break her water and save him with the my-wife-is-in-labor card. The fork was bloody. You have to go through the cervix to reach the baby-sac. ::shudders until all skin falls off::
Mr Robot has the team back together, and they’re trying to figure out the next step. Elliot meets with the White Rose, who tells him that they have very little time–and that forces him to take sudden and decisive action. He hacks Gideon’s info and uses it to get the access they need, effectively ruining his boss, who he admits is a good man, and who realizes now that Elliot is shifty af and can’t be trusted. Poor Gideon. He’s in way over his head.
Oh, and Tyrell has been working with Mr Robot and clearly expects something from him.
And then the crazy happened, as if that all wasn’t bizzarre enough already: Elliot is hanging out with Darleen, and they’re joking around and he totally misreads her signals and kisses her–which freaks her out and brings up “did you forget again? Did you forget who I am?”
I’m just gonna say it: She’s his sister.
He forgot his whole existence of his sister who he’s been working with for months.
That explains how she knows Angela, and why she’s just been waltzing into his apartment all season and making herself at home.
Elliot freaks out, and goes home, and finds out that he doesn’t exist online. He tried to hack himself and there was nothing to hack–apparently, he also forgot that he totally erased himself, and put himself right there on a disk in the file of other people he’s erased. It was the first disk in the file.
He decrypts the files on the disk and they’re all pictures of Mr Robot.
And then Mr Robot and kid-him and his mom.
He’s not imaginary–he’s his dad. Or, if he is imaginary, he’s still his dad but there’s no “he died of cancer when I was eight” that we have to have answered.
Right when Elliot is about to totally break down, Mr Robot himself shows up at the door and the episode goes to black and we all scream across the internets “what even just happened???” because seriously, what happened. We’ve all been suspecting that Elliot’s point of view is compromised at best, but it was looking like a Fight Club situation. Then, for a second, it was looking like maybe he was the Fight Club situation–and that might still turn out to be true. Maybe his dad didn’t die; maybe he did and Mr Robot is cracked and has been hallucinating that his son grew up and changed the world.
On the other hand, maybe Elliot’s dad’s death was part of the delusion from the beginning–maybe it was the mom that died, or maybe no one died but there was some other trauma that broke up the family and he took on Angela’s story as a replacement.
Or maybe none of this, and we’ve barely scratched the surface of the bonkers world he’s been living in all this time. Man, what a monkey wrench. Because is he even a world-changing hacker? Is the plan what he thinks it is? Are any of them who he thinks they are? If the plan is real, is he even capable of doing it, now that he knows he’s not seeing the world as it is? If he is, and he does, is there some other motive for the plan that he’s forgotten or deleted or never knew he had?
The rest of the episode was moving quickly but didn’t seem to be doing much–it was all small steps toward this hack they’ve been building up to–but that massive reveal at the end made it suddenly a whole different episode. Recast the context of the whole series up to this point. It was never a super-solid show that you can really say “this is what this is”, it was always shifting sands, but now it’s really shifty. Now everything is in question.
Now I can’t wait for the end of the season.
What did you guys think?
