UPDATE: Regarding Mafia III’s date, 2K has provided the following response to atombash.com: “Mafia III will release in calendar 2016 during Take-Two Interactive’s fiscal year 2017. No official release date has been announced at this time. It is common practice for retailers to list placeholder dates before an official release date has been announced due to the requirements of their operating systems.”
Regarding DOOM‘s date, a Bethesda representative told atombash.com, “At E3, we announced Spring 2016. Beyond that, we have not communicated any dates.”
Original Story: 2K Games and Bethesda Softworks are in the process of developing two highly anticipated games that are slated to launch sometime next year. Up until now no date has been listed, however, GameStop may have pulled back the veil on when gamers can expect Mafia III and DOOM to launch.
According to release dates currently listed on GameStop’s official site (seen in screenshot to the right), Mafia III is slated to launch on Tuesday, April 26, 2016. This would be slightly surprising, as Mafia III has felt like it would be a Fall 2016 title, at the earliest, and it, in theory, would be launching before Battleborn, which drops on May 3.
Elsewhere on GameStop’s site, they also list (seen in screenshot above) DOOM as a game that will be launching on Tuesday, May 31, 2016. This date wouldn’t be as surprising if it turns out to be true, given the fact that it matches up with what Pete Hines said during his E3 2015 opening monologue at Bethesda’s press conference.
He stated, “Thank you all for being here with us. We’ve put this show on for you to show the whole world what we’re up to and what’s coming from Bethesda over the next year.” In this context, the release date for DOOM make sense. Furthermore, when we interviewed Pete Hines a few months ago, we asked him if it was fair to assume that Dishonored 2 and DOOM will launch before E3 2016 and his response was simply, “Dishonored 2 and DOOM.”
Typically, retailers list dates as placeholders and they usually mean nothing, however, these dates are particularly noteworthy due to the fact that they are Tuesdays and fit within the time frames we’ve heard for when 2K and Bethesda say the games may be released. We’ve reached out to both publishers for comment on these dates and will update the article as is appropriate.
