Telltale has done it. Remember the feeling you have every year for the season finale of Game of Thrones? Your stomach in knots, the tension at a fever pitch, Episode Six of Telltales’ Game of Thrones series, The Ice Dragon, for better and for worse, delivers and leaves plenty of juicy tidbits behind to continue the series.
With Season Two of the series confirmed, Telltale had a litany of places to go creatively with The Ice Dragon and you’ll experience that from the get-go. As a matter of fact, the coolest part of The Ice Dragon is the fact that you have two completely different adventures, depending on who you chose to survive at the end of Episode Five. As well, all of the choices you’ve made earlier on will come back to either guide or haunt you and regardless of how safe or shrewd you played. You can expect a gruesome end- for someone.
It also helps that Telltale teases you throughout this episode. Once you’ve made a decision, you’ll have an opportunity or two to change it. Your mind will race with the thought of the impact the choice will have. You’ll press pause and put your hands on your head and ask yourself what you want to do. This is the essence of what a great Telltale is all about and there are easily a handful of moments where you know something special is happening.
At the same time, elements from this episode just feel “off.” While the overall tone is solid and comparable to that of the series, the “magical” elements that come into play later on are something the series isn’t known for. Sure, it’s easy to say there’s dragons and zombies already, who cares if there’s some magic, but it’s a twist that may aggravate some fans of the show.
Regardless, it’s hard to argue with an episode that gives you twice as much playability as the last one. With the entire season now completed as well, it’s a worthwhile endeavor to play through all six episodes again to see what other choices could have been made. Thanks to that type of replayability and the continued beautiful visuals and wonderfully-written story, the last episode of the first season of TellTale’s Game of Thrones series is a remarkable success, even with a few misses.
Entertaining: There’s everything you’d expect from a Telltale game- a beautiful look, amazing writing and of course, plenty of choices.
A Ton of Playability: If you’re a fan of the series, you will replay the entire season, there’s no escaping it.
Weird Story Additions: While Gared Tuttle’s role int he story is still an enthralling one, some facets of it don’t exactly tie in well.
Games of Thrones Episode Six The Ice Dragon is an awesome narrative of a family that does everything in its power to keep it. Thanks to a variety of choices and characters you care about, it’s an emotional ending to a wild first season.
