I’ve recently become obsessed with the idea behind the rage known as “pop up kitchens” or “pop up restaurants”. We don’t always have the time or money to hit our favorite local restaurants, and sometimes it’s simply fun to crack open that creative noggin and embark on the adventurous side of cooking.
Recently, my fiance and I decided to look for some local Monterey, CA area produce to use in our kitchen, which we call the “Howlin’ Wolf Pop Up Restaurant” (at this point we’re perfecting recipes and it’s been exclusively us cooking for ourselves — though we’d love to eventually expose more people to our culinary creations).
While looking around online we came across J&P Organics. It’s a small family run farm and delivery service that provides organically grown vegetables and fruits through CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).
We ordered our first organic produce box early in the week (with additional eggs added on to the order) and we couldn’t have been more pleased. The produce showed up on our door step on a warm Thursday after we purchased a box for delivery through their website. Some of the standout items were fresh onions, yams, cucumbers, carrots, green peppers, apples and Mandarin’s (as seen in the above image).
So far we’ve eaten some of the delicious Mandarin’s and apples as snacks. They taste very fresh and vibrant. Our first meal that we prepared was Thai Tuna Tacos for lunch. We used Thai Style Tuna Gourmet Selects from Sunkist and small Guerrero Taco Shells. Then we chopped up some of the local J&P Organics fresh lettuce, cucumbers and carrots and added to the tuna mix. Topped the taco with hot habanero shredded cheese. They made a great, healthy lunch while using local organic produce and simple store bought taco shells and tuna. Now that’s how you “Wolf Up” a dish!
Coming up, I’ll be posting about other organic creations that end up coming out of our “Howlin’ Wolf Pop Up Restaurant”. I’ll include photos and recipes with instructions on how you can Wolf it Up!
