When it opened in early 2014, the Holiday Inn and Suites in Durango, Colorado was one of just two new hotels opening its doors in the city. Before that time, Durango hadn’t had a new hotel since 1997. What does this mean to you? For those who appreciate the luxury of newness, there are very few hotels that fit this bill in the city of Durango. The Holiday Inn and Suites is a fantastic choice for your next visit for its new, beautiful décor and more.
Nestled at the base of a mesa in beautiful Durango, the Holiday Inn and Suites is truly ideally located. A short walk and an even shorter drive away is the downtown area with its boutique shops and fantastic restaurants frequented by locals. As that area can get a bit noisy though, it is also wonderful to be somewhat removed from Main Street’s hustle and bustle. My husband, two boys and I stayed here just a couple of weeks ago while visiting our son, a Ft. Lewis college student.
The parking was plentiful and included in the room rate (bonus!). The lobby was festively decorated and so inviting. The boys immediately located the sundry shop behind the front desk and began to pick out beverages and snacks. The shop sold microwave meals as well, which is incredibly convenient (each room has a microwave and mini fridge). The best part of arrival, however, was the staff. I have checked in to hotels all over the world and the staff at the Holiday Inn Durango is as professional, helpful and genuinely interested in the quality of their guests’ stay as any five-star hotel.
Many families opt for suites when bringing children along on vacation, but getting two nearby or connected rooms (as we did in this hotel) is a luxury. Here’s why:
1. When you have two rooms, you also have two bathrooms. I know I prefer not to share a bathroom with the children!
2. In a suite, the kids usually get a sofa bed. In a connecting room, they’ll have two comfortable double beds.
3. The wall between rooms is thicker than between a bedroom and sitting area in a suite. When the children are watching TV, you won’t have to hear it.
All three beds in our two rooms were excellent. My husband and I had a room with a king-sized bed and an electric fireplace which put out a great deal of heat when needed. The boys had a standard room with two double beds. Luxurious extras in the rooms included makeup wipes (why don’t all hotels have these?), a microwave and a mini fridge.
I could write ten pages on how wonderful the staff was here. Every staff member was eager to help, even if what I was asking wasn’t necessarily their job. I brought a technical question to the front desk (“How do we connect an Xbox One?”) and they didn’t rest until the perfect solution was in place. Every time we walked through the lobby, we were greeted personally with a warm hello. We had the same server for dinner and a late-night in-room snack and she remembered our names and preferences. The fresh cookies you’ll sometimes find in the lobby in the evening say it all – the people here really care. When I asked one of the boys what impressed him the most on our trip, he replied, “The people were so nice.” Wow.
Durango has a lot of one-of-a-kind restaurants, but you can’t beat the convenience of an on-site restaurant like the Holiday Inn’s Sporting News Grill. We ate there twice in our three days and ordered room service once. The best item on the menu I tried was the pizza – hands down (it was delicious and not at all greasy as most pizza is). If you choose the nachos, they are also delicious and will feed a small army.
My Recommendation: Planning a trip to Durango? Stay here! Luxury is in the details and in how well you’re treated. This hotel is a one-in-a-million for guest service. It will also impress you with its new décor and all-around emphasis on comfort. Don’t hesitate to book a room or two.
