Fox cancels American Idol after its 15th season, the announcement made official on May 11.
According to the Inquisitr, the show has run its course, and Fox will take it off the air in 2016. With ratings dropping over 60 percent over the past few years, the show is barely bringing in 11 million viewers, and it is clear that people just aren’t interested anymore. This could be due to the loss of some incredible judges (like Simon Cowell), or it could be due in part to competition from other shows, like NBC’s The Voice.
Regardless of how you look at it, American Idol just isn’t pumping out superstars anymore. The Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood’s of the world aren’t coming out — or maybe they just aren’t out there. There hasn’t been a huge star to come from Idol in quite a few years. In fairness, The Voice hasn’t really given the world a huge superstar in recent years either.
Now that Fox canceled American Idol, many are actually looking forward to the 15th and final season of the show which will air in January. Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban will all be back on the judge’s panel, and Ryan Seacrest will be back as the host. According to the Wall Street Journal, Fox confirmed that Season 15 will “pay tribute” to the previous seasons of the show.
