Popcorn. The thought of it most likely brings to mind the popping sound that is made while it is being made. Or, maybe, the smell of hot, buttered popcorn at the movie theater is more likely. Popcorn is a versatile type of food. It also has a way of describing life.
Popcorn can be air-popped, cooked in oil, or microwaved. It can be sweet, salty, savory, spicy, or plain; but, it is generally always considered a special treat. Bags of unpopped kernels come in white or yellow choices. A convenient item is ready-to-eat popcorn, either sweetened or plain. A popular gift idea is a tin of flavored popcorn. Freshly made kettle corn is a local favorite.
Some people load their popcorn with salt or melted butter; whereas, others coat theirs with cheese, spices, chocolate, cinnamon, caramel, or sugar. The accompanying video shows how to make bacon popcorn. Popcorn is a healthy choice when served plain. It may also be added to other ingredients, such as almonds, peanuts, sunflower seed, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate chips, and/or dried fruit, to create a healthy snack.
Now, when it comes to looking at a bowl of popcorn as a way of looking at life, there are many similarities. Popcorn may be bland, dull, or boring when popped without any sort of flavoring added. Life can be this way if a person does the same thing every single day, without adding some variety or spark to the day. Once some sort of salt, sugar, or other flavoring is added, popcorn tastes a whole lot better. It becomes more enjoyable. Taking a walk, participating in a random act of kindness, or just doing something different adds to a person’s day. It helps add that little something extra.
Popcorn may be eaten one kernel at a time or by the handful. When life is rushed, it is like gulping down handfuls of popcorn. Eating is accomplished, just as life is carried on; but, is it enjoyable? Taking time to taste each kernel and to feel the texture of the popcorn in one’s fingertips creates a better experience. Life, when taken at a more reasonable pace lowers the possibility of stress or other frustrations.
Unpopped kernels, in the bottom of the bowl, can resemble several possibilities. They could signify the bumps and hardships that life brings. They happen. Another way of looking at the unpopped kernels is that they are the hopes and dreams that have not taken root yet. They have not been allowed to pop and be accomplished. It is saddening when a person has many unrealized hopes and dreams, or has totally given up on even having any.
When joined with other ingredients, popcorn becomes a special treat. When people work together as a team, friends gather for a meal or an evening out, it becomes a special treat as well. Friendships, relationships, and fun times experienced as a group bring more joy to life. Being alone is fine, but time with others makes for a healthier and happier life.
Genesis 1: 29 says, “God said, ‘See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food,” (The New Revised Standard Version Bible, 1989, New York, NY: American Bible Society).
Popcorn, whether salty or sweet, is a great little snack. Be sure to add a little variety to life and enjoy.
