During a Monday interview with Fight Hype, Floyd Mayweather harshly criticized Adrien Broner for crude comments he made last month about Ashley Theophane.
After Broner (31-2, 23 KOs) recorded a 12th round TKO over Russian Khabib Allakhverdiev on October 3, “The Problem” publicly disparaged Theophane (39-6-1, 11 KOs), the only British member of The Money Team.
“Bring (Theophane) to come see me,” said Broner, 26, who once gleefully flushed $20 bills down a toilet and posted the video on social media. “I bet I bring the girl out of that boy like Bruce Jenner.”
In a lengthy retort, Mayweather (49-0, 26 KOs) mentioned Broner’s losses to Shawn Porter and Marcos Maidana and defended both his promotional firm and Jenner.
“You know, you got fighters that I’ve stood behind, like Adrien Broner. When he lost to Maidana, I was the first one to post a picture of me and him, and I told him, ‘You know what? I’m behind you. Hold your head up high. Stay focused and you’ll be able to bounce back,’” said Mayweather, 38, who is reportedly valued at $260 million and has been declared Forbes’ highest-paid athlete twice in the past three years.
“But then you have this same guy that I’m defending and standing behind and going to war for is the same guy that said, ‘You know what? I love my big brother Floyd Mayweather, but (expletive) The Money Team!’ If you saying, ‘(expletive) Al Haymon,’ you saying, ‘(expletive) Floyd Mayweather!’ If you saying, ‘(expletive) Floyd Mayweather,’ you saying, ‘(expletive) Al Haymon!'”
“I mean, then you are there taking shots at Bruce Jenner. When it’s all said and done, let Bruce Jenner live his life the way he wanna live his life. Bruce Jenner don’t even know who Adrien Broner is, but Adrien Broner do know who Bruce Jenner is. You gotta watch what you say because you don’t never know who you may need in life or who you may bump into in life. You got to realize this, I mean, I feel like Adrien Broner still has a lot of growing up to do. He has a lot of growing up to do.”
Although extremely skilled and blessed with an envious array of pugilistic abilities, Broner’s an insufferable blowhard who lacks the intellect, determination, and testicular fortitude to become a superstar in the ring. Without drastic personal and professional improvements, Broner won’t fulfill his vast potential and mature into a pound-for-pound great.
With “a lot of growing up to do,” Adrien Broner remains the biggest joke in prizefighting today.
