THOMASVILLE, Ga., Flowers Foods, Inc. announced on August 12, 2015 that Flower Foods, Inc. is acquiring Dave’s Killer Bread, the best-selling organic bread in the U.S., according to Koin.com news. Flower Foods is paying approximately $275 million in cash to existing shareholders, including members of the Dahl family and Goode Partners. The acquisition should be finished in the third quarter of 2015.
Originally Dave’s Killer Bread was Nature Bake and founded in 1955 by the Dahl family. In 2005 Nature Bake changed the name to Dave’s Killer Bread, which was the most popular of varieties that they offered due to it’s exposure at The Portland Farmer’s Market. Dave’s Killer Bread has 17 varieties of whole-grain organic bakery products distributed across Canada and the U.S., and is now the largest organic bread company in North America.
Allen L. Shiver, Flowers’ president and chief executive officer said, “This is a well-positioned, fast growing company with excellent brand equity and an on-trend organic portfolio that appeals to today’s consumers. The Dahl family and Goode Partners have built a great brand with a commitment to quality and community, two attributes that Flowers values tremendously. We are especially pleased to welcome the Dave’s Killer Bread team members who will bring expertise and experience to our company.”
Local Portlander’s have been asking what will happen to the 300 people employed by Dave’s Killer Bread? Dave’s Killer Bread employs 300 and operates one bakery in Milwaukie, Oregon. The Portland Tribune reported on August 13, 2015 that when Flower Foods takes over the company, the bakery will be an independent subsidiary and is expected to continue in Oregon.
Quite often local organic companies know that in order to grow they often must sell to a larger and often public company. Reported in the Portland Tribune on August 13, 2015, John Tucker, Dave’s Killer Bread chief executive officer, said in a Facebook post that the purchase “couldn’t come at a better time” for the bakery that employs about 300 people. Co-founder and namesake Dave Dahl told KGW August 13, 2015 he’s excited about the sale, but it’s bittersweet, too.
“I’m doing my best to be a good example now and watch others take over the company and make it a bigger company and more successful,” he said.
Also reported in the Portland Tribune, “It takes a special bakery to bake the Dave’s Killer Bread way — you’ve got to have the right equipment, the right people and the right heart,” Tucker wrote. “That’s why the partnership with Flowers Foods couldn’t come at a better time. Flowers Foods has a long history of producing whole grain breads, a deep understanding of the unique process that’s required to bake a bread like Dave’s, and full intention to maintain what makes our bread powerfully different: organic, whole grain and non-GMO ingredients and a commitment to seeing the potential in our people.”
Hundreds of thousands of people will now be exposed and able to enjoy Dave’s Killer Bread and all it’s organic and tasty bread products.
