If you own a dog, you know that dogs need exercise. Currently, it is the trend to exercise with your pooch together with others. A happy and healthy dog is a dog going to an exercise class at the park with other dogs and owners. In San Diego, there is a business called Lease Your Fitness which organizes exercise classes at area parks. People everywhere are taking to the parks with their beloved pooch for a good workout with others and their dogs. It is the thing to do now! In Colorado, it is true that off leash dog parks are common places to run freely alongside your dog while other dogs are walking or playing catch with their masters. Walking your dog is always good for your health and fitness whether you do it alone or in an organized, costly group.
One company in Prospect Park, New Jersey as well as in Central Park, New York is called Go Fetch Run. They advertise: “You will see results! Our goal is to make every workout challenging and fun for both you and your dog. Just like with dog training, we believe in the power of positive reinforcement to get the best out of each participant. Our Cross-Training incorporates cardio, strength training, agility, core work, and our very own Down and Dirty Obstacle Course loved by people and dogs alike. You will be challenged and you and your dog will have a great time!” The dog exercise business is big business in today’s world. It costs only $5 to just check out one class. Enroll for more classes and pay higher fees. Perhaps do find a personal trainer or an exercise class for both hound and human for better health. It may be worth while, and a good financial investment. It is good to invest in your health!
According to a recent article entitled “In Yoga Class, Do Dogs Do Downward-Facing Human?” in the Wall Street Journal on November 8, 2015, Rachel Bachman writes that “Increasingly, people are working out with their pets.” It is about time to get both dog and human being in better fitness and health, because more than 50 percent of dogs in this country are overweight, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. And 69% of humans are overweight in the United States according to the Journal of Physical Activity & Health. No time like the present to begin an exercise program with your furry, four-legged friend. Sleep comes easily to those who exercise on a daily basis. We all know that sleep is excellent for good health.
One exercise called “puppy push-ups” requires the dog to sit, lie down then pop up on command. Well, trying this exercise with my well-trained poodle puppy was a challenge because after every routine, the puppy demanded a treat. That was ok, because Training Treats made with real beef are tiny tidbits which the dog easily swallows before looking for more direction, but by the fourth poodle push-up, my dog found this activity with me so much fun that he began to jump up and down and run wildly in circles around me, which of course is all good exercise, too, but a bit on the wild side. Really, it was impossible to get my poodle to do more than three puppy push-ups before losing concentration for poodles are so smart and also very playful.
Some people teach yoga to dogs and people–check out the popular Doga Dog DVDs by Suzi Teitelman Arab. Meditation with your dog may try to bring peace and tranquility to both pooch and master. Other people like to compete in formal jogging events with their dogs. According to Bachman in her WJS article, “in May 2015, 400 people and 110 dogs registered for the Dirty Dog 15K Trail Run in Charleston, West Virginia. Given how the number of participants had multiplied over the race’s 11-year history, the competition evolved from casual trot to dogfight.” It is called the Dirty Dog because the dogs do get dirty going up and down the Kanawha State Forest trails. Surely, with the popularity of people running with dogs at organized events, there is bound to be more exciting, competitive action like real dog fights!
Just like people, dogs are social animals, and going to exercise class with a group may be a happy activity for some and not others. The important thing for health and fitness is to exercise everyday either with an organized group or simply alone with your trustworthy, canine friend.
