On Monday, May 4th, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York held their annual Costume Institute Gala. Every year a different theme is chosen and the guests at the gala attempt to represent the theme through fashion as they walk the red carpet. This year’s theme was China: Through the Looking Glass. This article discusses several of the fashions that celebrities wore at the gala.
The theme seemed to present a challenge for ladies this year. There were some who chose to go all out with a costume-like outfit (Sarah Jessica Parker, Rihanna). Others chose to wear red; which can be associated with China. However, the majority of looks were eveningwear attire that didn’t appear to evoke any clear connection to the theme of the night.
Sarah Jessica Parker is usually a staple guest at the gala – and seems to try her best to wear something interesting and/or in keeping with the theme. This year she garnered attention by wearing a very intricately designed headdress in red and light blue. It featured adornments that had the appearance of curled ribbons, as well as long tassels that draped down and fell along her arms.
Rihanna, like Ms. Parker, also came in costume. She wore an off the shoulder robe-like dress in yellow and gold tones that had a very long, rounded train. It had fur sewn around the entire edge of the dress, and nature inspired embroidery as well. She wore a gold headpiece as a sort of crown. Although her outfit wasn’t particularly attractive, at least it was interesting to look at.
Wearing more traditional eveningwear in white, black, or metallic tones were singer Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Julianne Moore, Kate Mara, Katie Holmes, Lizzy Caplan, Naomi Campbell, Sofia Vergara, and Olivia Munn. Jessica Chastain looked charming as usual in a sparkling gold halter dress with a deep v neckline. Naomi Campbell’s fitted dress appeared to be made of black mesh with gold appliques over most of the bodice. Sofia Vergara wore a strapless, sweetheart neckline gown in white with a flowing chiffon skirt and silver appliques on the bodice. The gowns worn by all the ladies mentioned in this paragraph can be seen in the slideshow.
A few more gowns of note were seen on Alison Brie, Amal Clooney, Keri Russell, and Jennifer Lopez. Alison Brie wore a long sleeved purple gown that had a lace underlining, with a tulle overlay adorned with rectangle appliques. Amal Clooney wore a striking red gown with a fitted bodice and a skirt of cascading layers of ruffles. Keri Russell’s gown was entirely covered in dark green feathers. Jennifer Lopez caught attention in a gown with a nude lining underneath and what looked like a dragon or bird figure made of crystals sewn on the bodice.
Overall the ladies’ fashions this year weren’t very over the top or costume like. The most attractive looks would fall under the “typical evening wear” category. But it’s nice to see how the women tried to represent the theme of the night; or simply chose something elegant to wear.
