LATE BREAKING NEWS!
An NFL official has confirmed that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck will not play in the Thursday Night Football (TNF) game against the Houston Texans tonight..
Indianapolis head coach Chuck Pagano said the team must do what is best for their star quarterback who apparently has not recovered completely from a shoulder injury. Veteran Matt Hasselbeck will make his second consecutive start as Luck’s replacement.
So an earlier version of this article that said the game would feature two aerial combinations -Houston quarterback Ryan Mallett to wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and Indianapolis quarterback Andrew Luck to wide receiver Donte Moncrief – is incorrect. Hasselbeck will be throwing passes to Moncrief in this critical AFC South game.
Mallett and Hopkins have combined for 21 pass completions for 276 yards and two touchdowns. Hopkins is averaging over 13 yards per catch when Mallett is the quarterback. He has an additional 10 catches and 133 receiving yards and one touchdown when Brian Hoyer is playing quarterback for Houston.
Luck has thrown three of his five touchdown passes to Moncrief. Moncrief has caught 17 passes for 200 yards when Luck is the Colts quarterback. Last weekend he caught six passes thrown by Matt Hasselbeck for 75 yards.
Mallett, Hopkins, Luck and Moncrief are “Tweener” players. A Tweener is a player who averages at least 10 fantasy football points per game (FFPPG).
Here is a closer look at each player from a fantasy football statistical perspective plus we’ve thrown in a “Sleeper” pick for week #5.
No. 1 – DeAndre Hopkins is the best wide receiver in the TNF Week #5 game
Houston wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had a very productive start in game #1. He scored 23.80 points, according to football.fantasysports.yahoo.com.
Hopkins is one of eight wide receivers who average over 15 fantasy football points per game (FFPPG). He is currently ranked No. 6 among wide receivers with 60.9 points, three touchdowns and 409 receiving yards. Expectation: Hopkins will score at least 13 points in the TNF game.
No. 2 – Donte Moncrief is a solid ‘bye’ week wide receiver
Four NFL teams have a “bye” for week #5, so you need a wide receiver like Donte Moncrief of Indianapolis to fill in as a starter. He has 45.5 fantasy points, 23 catches and is quarterback Andrew Luck’s favorite target. Expectation: Moncrief will score at least 12 points in tonight’s game.
No. 3 – Scoring pattern suggests Andrew Luck would have done well tonight
You could say it has been an “odd” season for Indianapolis quarterback Andrew Luck. He posted 19.72 points in week 1 and 18.50 points in week 3, while weeks 2 and 4 were downers for him.
Luck missed week 4’s game due to injury and will miss tonight’s game too, so the odd-week scoring outburst that we earlier reported simply won’t happen in week #5.
No. 4 – Ryan Mallett should not start on your fantasy football team this week
There are 21 quarterbacks with more fantasy football points than Ryan Mallett of Houston. Though he has gotten results throwing the ball to DeAndre Hopkins, Mallett has been inconsistent and was replaced by Brian Hoyer in last week’s game. Foster’s ability to play will influence Mallett’s productivity. Expectation: No Foster = 1-9 points for Mallett. A healthy Foster = 11-18 points for Mallett.
No. 5 – Sleeper Alert! If Arian Foster is healthy, he could post 20 points
If Arian Foster is healthy, expect the Houston Texans to run the ball a lot against Indianapolis in the TNF game. The Texans want to rely on a productive running game and tough defense to win games and get them to the playoffs.. Expectation: A healthy Foster can provide 20 fantasy football points against the Colts defense.
