I really hate it when people say to me, “I look better without eyeliner, so I never wear it”. No you don’t. You do not. Maybe you don’t know how to apply it. Perhaps you’re choosing the wrong color. But you don’t look better without it. I may be the wrong person to ask, because if it were up to me I would prance out the front door every morning with Ke$ha level eyeliner (see photo), happily leaving a trail of glitter and nonsense whenever I went. Alas, I work in a business casual environment and I have an impressionable toddler, so I clearly have to force my love for eyeliner onto other people. JUST WEAR IT.
Really though, a decent eyeliner job (or application, if you’re fancy, I am not) can completely change the look of your face. It’s incredibly fun to play with, and I highly recommend YouTube or Pinterest for some amazing tutorials. Whether you’re looking to tight line or smudge the crap out of it in an organized manner, you’ll find what you need at both sites. Over the years, I have compiled a list of eyeliner must-haves. So even if you look better without it, promise me you’ll try one of these at least one time.
My absolute favorite eyeliner in all the land is Tarteist Clay Paint Liner by Tarte. It’s a little pricey, but one pot lasts forever. I haven’t had it on hand lately, and I miss it. There have been a few late nights spent adding it to my cart while window shopping at Ulta, but I always end up giving in to my mom guilt and deciding that my $24 would be better spent on Pull-Ups. Nobody wants to clean up pee while I say, “But look at my eyeliner! Looks amazing, right?!” If you have a little extra cash, pick this one up. You won’t be sorry.
Next we have one in the same price range, but you will swoon over it. I’m all sweaty just thinking about it. Meet the Channing Tatum of eyeliners: Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner by Urban Decay. It can be a little hard to handle, but there are amazing color options available (Midnight Cowboy) and it will spruce up any $1.50 drugstore liner. Once you get the hang of it you’ll want to wear it every single day, which you should absolutely do. People might talk…let them.
Sometimes you have to investigate the drugstore shelves for the high-end knock offs. Think of it as the other guy in Magic Mike that was also hot, but he was next to Channing so it didn’t make a difference. Alone, he’s wonderful. This is kind of like the same situation. Walk the Line Eyeliner by Hard Candy is available only at Walmart and comes with a substantially lower price tag than Heavy Metal, but has the same effect. Hard Candy is indeed my favorite drugstore brand for eyeliner/shadow, and this one comes in some fantastic colors as well. I always choose black because I legitimately fear change, but I swear one day I will rock the green.
Finally, if you’re looking for something super inexpensive that won’t budge all day unless you burst into a fit of hysterical tears, then you want e.l.f. Studio Cream Eyeliner. Purchase an angled liner brush, because the one included with the product isn’t all that effective. The liner itself is thick, creamy, easy to apply and stubborn as an ox. Again, your color choices are extensive. Truly a great find and if you’re not looking to lighten your wallet, this is definitely the choice for you. I could discuss this for another five paragraphs, but I’ll let you go with one parting piece of advice: When in doubt, choose the black. Good luck and happy lining.
