EX1 Cosmetics offered Examiner an exclusive get-the-look from singer Tinashe’s recent performance on ABC’s Good Morning America. Examiner also interviewed Tinashe’s talented makeup artist, Amanda Wilson, to discover everything from career inspiration to her favorite products to use on the young singer.
Examiner (Cristine Calvanico): How long have you been a makeup artist? What made you choose this career?
AW: I have been a hair and makeup artist for about 3 years now. Well, I was always drawn to painting and sketching as a hobby, but it wasn’t until I was getting my BFA in acting and had my makeup done for the first time that I realized that was where my true creative heart belonged. Something about being able combine my love for raw emotion and story telling and executing it through my makeup brush really sparked something inside of me. I love bringing out someone’s inner story and making them feel as beautiful as the world sees them.
Examiner: Is there a specific product or look you typically go to for Tinashe, or any of your other clients?
AW: For Tinashe it’s all about great skin so my obvious choice for her amazing olive complexion is EX1 Cosmetics. And the same goes for all my clients. I love beautiful glowing skin everyone wants to look like they just got back from a Caribbean vacation.
Examiner: How long does it take to make up a main act and their entire crew of backup singers?
AW: That all depends on how intense the look is and also how much time is given. A lot of times the artist has to rehearse and do pre interviews even before the main performance. So I always like to make sure my makeup will hold up under the lights and with the HD cameras, so extra prep time for the skin is very necessary. I would say for Tinashe in her Good Morning America performance with hair and makeup it took about an hour. I kept her look really clean and young. Her dancers — around two hours.
Examiner: What’s in your personal makeup bag? Is there anything in your makeup bag that has been there since the beginning? (A perpetual repurchase, something you absolutely can’t live without?)
AW: I can not live without lipstick! I also am all about a good strong brow, so brow gel is everything to me. Also mascara — that’s all a girl needs.
Examiner: A client sits in your chair and has inflamed, red blotchy skin. What do you do?
AW: I first cleanse the skin with a hypoallergenic facial cleanser. Then I have this amazing Korean aloe face mask that will help calm the skin. So I will let that sit for about 20 minutes. It’s important to put the moisture back into the skin and I found that coconut oil helps your skin retain moisture and elasticity, and it also has anti-septic and anti-microbial properties.
Examiner: Since you made up a group of people that were on television and under bright, unforgiving light, you must have special tips and tricks for making them look HD-ready. Can you share your best advice on how to help makeup look more like skin?
AW: The most important thing to have them ready for HD and the unforgiving lights is great skin prep. I make sure the skin is properly moisturized and then I buff a great primer into the skin. To keep the skin looking like skin under those intense lights it is very important you are using the right foundation — and I personally love EX1 Cosmetics. I just make sure to seal it with EX1 Cosmetics Mineral Powder — a little goes a long way. Too much powder is when the skin can start to look cakey and even make you look older and no one wants that. It’s very important to finish the look with a great finishing spray so it will set the look while also giving it a slight glow.
Examiner: Finally, where do you pull inspiration from for your looks and overall creativity?
AW: Honestly, I go to different art galleries and museums. I have always been inspired by abstract art like Jackson Pollock. Also I never really prep my looks before hand — there’s something about when you get on set, you look at the wardrobe, and speak to the whole team — that helps me build a story in my head. It’s always the people that are around me that inspire me for shoots. I always love to take my model or client and bring something out in them that I see.
