Dave Annable is about to get really busy. The actor just started shooting his new NBC medical drama “Heartbreaker,” and he’s also expecting his first child (it’s a girl!) with wife Odette Annable (“Astronauts Wives Club”). So maybe that’s why he recently took a “mancation” as a “last hurrah” before his entire life is turned upside down!
Annable spoke with Examiner TV on Wednesday to give us the scoop on his guys’ day out at Angeles National Golf Club, hosted by Mike’s Hard Lemonade, as well as what to expect when “Heartbreaker” premieres later this season.
“We got to be out there in the sun and sort of hit golf balls, and be horrible, and drink Mike’s Hard Lemonade all day, so I mean it was heaven on earth for us,” Annable said of his guys’ golf outing. “And my buddies are dads, so I got to really see how much they enjoyed it after having a one-year-old. I think right around the one-year mark we might have to have another one …”
Annable grew up playing golf with his father, grandfather and sister, and it sounds like he plans to keep up the family tradition. “It’s just the best bonding time out there for me,” he explained. “When you get out there with your buddies, everybody puts their phones away, and [we] spend five hours outside and talking and catching up and laughing, and to me that means the world. I think it’s a really special thing and I can’t wait to then pay it forward and show my little girl. …It’s definitely gonna be a family sport for the Annables for a long time coming.”
When it comes to raising his daughter, the actor revealed it has already been decided that he’ll be the fun parent while his wife will be more of the disciplinarian – at least at first. “Odie and I, we’ve already agreed she’s bad cop and I’m good cop,” he said. “I’m dad. It’s daddy’s little girl. I’ll be the fun guy…but when she hits 14 that could be a whole different story.”
On the acting front, Annable has already had a dream career, co-starring on the popular ABC drama “Brothers and Sisters” for five years. “It was probably the best time of my life, where you do the most growth as a person and you sort of live this crazy life,” he recalled of his time on the show. “I’m from a small town in upstate New York, so having a show that shoots for five years in Los Angeles was pretty spectacular and looking across from Sally Field and Calista (Flockhart) and Rachel (Griffiths) and Ron (Rifkin) and Matthew Rhys and everybody. It was such a wonderful time, and you get older and as a man you don’t realize what you had when you had it. So I think in my career it just made me much more grateful for every opportunity that you get, and just to enjoy it, enjoy all the success.”
He’ll have another chance at success with the already-buzzy “Heartbreaker,” which just started shooting. (Production will take a brief hiatus next month so pregnant star Melissa George can give birth and spend time with her own baby.) Annable said the “Heartbreaker” cast is having a blast, and while the show is a medical drama based on real-life cardiothoracic surgeon Kathy Magliato, it’s “way funnier” than Annable originally thought it would be, thanks to the real-life doc’s sharp sense of humor.
While Annable’s “Heartbreaker” character, Dr. Pierce Harrison, is already being called the new McDreamy, the actor says he tries to keep a sense of humor about it. “I’m a real fat kid on the inside still, so it’s pretty embarrassing, but of course it feels nice,” he said. “I got a hot wife, so…”
As for how he plans to spend these last few weeks before the baby arrives, Annable says he and his wife are finalizing the hospital checklist and installing those all-important car seats. “I’m just working, shooting the show until the end of September, and then we’re on a little hiatus, which ironically works out great for Team Annable over here, so I can be home with the baby and sort of figure out as much as we can before I start back up in January,” he said. “So we’re just lucky and grateful.”
