Examiner chats with ButcherBoyToma, GadgetGaz and Cyberschlumpf, the three builders behind the largest voxel build of all time, The Sun Temple Project.
Using Fortresscraft Evolved as their platform, the trio are in the middle of designing one of the wildest user-created levels, ever. Discussing their inspiration and goals for the project, the three give Examiner an exclusive look at how the project came to be.

Examiner: How did you get involved with this project?
ButcherBoyToma: Cyberschlumpf asked if I could build my FortressCraft Xbox version of the Sun Temple in FortressCraft Evolved as he was a big fan of that build. I made some initial plans and realised I could create this even bigger and better than the original as I had more space and unlimited Detail blocks. I created the main sun temple and looking at it realised this would be a very big project and would take a very long time to build on my own. This is when I contacted Cyberschlumpf and GadgetGaz and asked if they cared to help.
GadgetGaz: Paul (aka ButcherBoyToma) approached me to ask if I was interested in helping with a huge project he had planned to be working on, and how could I not say yes with big smiles, as I have been following Paul’s amazing builds over several years and his youtube has always been a source for help and inspiration to me and if I wanted to learn or know anything about FortressCraft I knew where to look first. It was also a big compliment to have been asked as well to help and be part of the building of Sun Temple World.
Cyberschlumpf: (translated from German) In 2011 I was very impressed with the first Sun Temple, built by Butcherboytoma on the Xbox. Even today, I think it is the best Xbox World of all.
As Fortress Craft Evolved was released on Steam, I asked Butcherboytoma if he can rebuild the Sun Temple. At first he did not want to, but eventually he came up with the proposal that he could build a new Sun Temple world with 12 Zodiac and Moon Temple and if we. GadGetGaz and I would like to help build.
So we began.
I support the project and created the big Pyramid in the center of the world and the Moon Temple. I also created the musical world (DJ Felias – Sun Temple Theme)
Examiner: Many gamers will wonder why you didn’t do this in Minecraft, not knowing the true power of Fortresscraft Evolved. for those gamers who are not familiar with the game, can you give us some background?
BBT: From a purely creative viewpoint, FortressCraft Evolved is like Photoshop compared to other Voxel creative modes that are more like Microsoft paint.
Let’s talk scale to begin with. This is Minecraft at approx. 1 to 1 scale:
This is the same scale in FortressCraft Evolved:
Using an Artistic viewpoint, There is no denying the difference in quality on a small scale.
I can add eye-watering detail on a scale you will never see in other available Voxel creative games using Ingame tools.
The second point would have to be world size.
MineCraft’s worlds are large but still limited so huge builds have to be spread across many maps.
FortressCraft Evolved could take every single Minecraft world ever built into one world and still have room for a full-sized Solar system.
My third point would have to be texture packs. Minecraft can import texture packs but you are limited.
FortressCraft Evolved has a paint Gun feature so you can change the colour of most blocks as well as almost unlimited Detailed blocks you create yourself. This gives you a nearly unlimited supply of different texture packs in the game at once.
These added to an extremely powerful copy-paste tool and super build allowing you to create shapes such as spheres in seconds give the creative builder THE best creative experience.
GG: I have nothing against Minecraft or people who enjoy playing it and it’s a great game of course, there are several in the community that play both Minecraft and FortressCraft like many play several first person shooters. I found FortressCraft on indie games on Xbox and thought I’d try it and I just loved the game, to be honest I had not played much Minecraft before this, and from my own creative perspective with detail custom blocks I enjoyed playing FortressCraft on Xbox indie games and was a way to relax after work, and just enjoyed creating
Now we have FortressCraft Evolved on PC it took the creative part and detail blocks to the next level with pretty much unlimited detail blocks as far as I am aware and most importantly no limit in height or width or depth of the worlds you create in, Often on Xbox I used to build something huge and find I got to the edge of the world and could no longer continue the huge guitar or whatever, but this is no problem at all on FortressCraft Evolved PC.
If you are a creative person and enjoy building, then in this game even at pre-alpha you can build anything you can think of, your imagination is your only limitation, if you have the patience to learn how to use the tools in this game to create whatever your imagination inspires then you will love it if creativity is your thing, but also there is survival mode that holds its own appeal and is very very good and will grow even better..
One of the main features I love about Fortresscraft are the creative tools we are given to make our creations.
A place you can build and save your own custom detail blocks to then use to build your own creations, best of all you can create well in excess of 1,000 of them if you so wanted to.
Instantly create small or huge square areas of blocks, do the same for a cylinder shape, and also create Spheres, you can also use them to dig out shapes.
“Copy & Paste and Schematics”
Select something you have built like a house or in my case a Robot made with 50+ custom detail blocks, then copy it, then paste it somewhere else or save it as a schematic then go to your schematics at any time and select it and paste it whenever you want to. You can even rotate the whole thing before you paste it…. amazing
Configurable lighting at that. Configure the colour strength and distance and even shadow type, individually for every single light you place.
I could go on and on but then if you are liking what’s mentioned above then you are most likely going to enjoy the game and enjoy exploring everything else out once you start playing it and creating anything you can think up.
CS: (translated from German) Why do we not build in Minecraft: Minecraft is a nice game, without question, but I personally do not like the graphics and limited options for construction. Fortress Craft has already proven on the Xbox that there are better ways to build wonderful worlds. With detail Blocks intrinsically, which is unique in voxel Games. And with the added building options within Fortress Craft Evolved it’s nice to watch, as in the style of Fortress Craft beautiful Xbox worlds they can be greater still. And what is also very important to note: requests and suggestions from us three builders are appreciated by the developers, and they have implemented and integrated into the game new blocks that we chose.
Examiner: How long do you think it will take?
BBT: This is a tough one, We have to take into consideration how much time we can spare to build and also hardware, game changes as it is early access but I am planning on one year if I can put in the hours. I have recently lost my Job so until I find another I can really hammer into this build, If we get support or funding I can keep this up indefinitely cutting time off completion, but if no support is forthcoming I will have to cut my hourly building down this will delay completion. We also offer adding designs for patrons if they support us depending on what they require depends on added build time.
In addition to watching and sharing our build videos, you can directly support the project by donating on the Patreon page here.
GG: It’s a huge project to take on, 14 temples in all not including the surrounding grounds of each temple, and other projects we have planned to add in, so it’s an ongoing project that isn’t just a few months’ work for sure.
CS: (translated from German) Although it will be a long time until it is done, I’ll run with all my heart until the great Fortress Craft Evolved project is finished.
Examiner: Is there anything else you’re curious to build in the game, why?
BBT: If I get a good suggestion I may build it but I just go with the flow, If I get a lightbulb moment I generally build it. I have built all sorts from the Wild West to Star wars.
GG: I would love to build with water added to builds, but we are waiting for it to be developed and implemented in the future patches, reason being I love seeing reflections of buildings in surrounding lakes or ponds or fountains, it just looks amazing, especially on film.
Examiner: How do you want this game to be remembered?
BBT: I would like the build to be remembered as Inspirational. It does not matter what game you choose to build in, if you really try and put in the effort you can create wonders.
GG: It would be very nice if it was remembered at all one day, that’s how I’d like it to be remembered.
CS: (translated from German) My wish for the Sun Temple world is that she becomes more alive and more varied than we can imagine today will be remembered for eternity.
Examiner: What’s next?
BBT: Ha ha, A long rest.
GG: Next we crack on with the next batch of ideas and try and think up nice designs we hope people can see and appreciate, and hopefully inspire each other but also more importantly hope to inspire other people to start creating awesome things in FortressCraft Evolved.
