Tonight marked the last night of a month-long Wednesday ‘gun control’ vigil by Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown organization in New Hampshire. The group has been holding an hour-long vigil each Wednesday night in front of the Exeter Town Hall to promote gun control. One of the members of the group is Representative Skip Berrien (D – Exeter) who provided this author with an interview.
When asked what the purpose of the vigil was Berrien answered “The purpose of these vigils is to demonstrate to the public that there is a will to do something about gun control and particularly for the reduction of gun violence.” Even though New Hampshire is one of the safest states in the country with some of the least strict gun control laws, Berrien still thinks there is an issue that somehow needs to be resolved.
Berrien was concerned about the number of firearms that exist in the country. He believes the United States needs to get away from the ‘gun culture’ that exists and wants to change people’s mindsets so they don’t feel they need firearms. He believes there could be ‘buybacks’ like in Australia. He claims he’s not for confiscation even though that is exactly what they did in Australia.
Berrien admits that the majority of gun deaths are due to suicides but doesn’t believe the suicide problem is strictly due to firearms. When asked what gun control laws he thinks should be put into place, the first he mentions is registration. He believes in the gun show loophole and that people can buy firearms over the internet without background checks.
Although Berrien was told it’s against federal law to knowingly sell to a prohibited person, Berrien didn’t seem to know this was a law and wants to create a brand new state law that does the same thing. He also seeks to create more gun free zones.
Berrien believes people will ‘feel safer’ if they are in a place where guns aren’t allowed. Clearly he doesn’t understand that the majority of mass shootings have all occurred in gun free zones and when asked about that he admits it’s not going to stop everyone from committing a mass shooting. He admits his own gun control solution of a gun free zone is not going to stop a criminal but will indeed stop law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves.
Berrien also seems to believe that only women with skills with a firearm should be allowed to protect themselves. He believes that only a minority of women actually get firearm safety training. Berrien thinks that women who have firearms to protect themselves shouldn’t have them and should wait for the cops to arrive. Berrien and Everytown want women to wait minutes for help when seconds matter.
When asked about a woman carrying on a campus to protect herself from rape, Berrien still didn’t think women should carry a firearm. He believes that there should be things put into place on a campus that could help prevent that. He didn’t mention specifics but wasn’t very comfortable talking about the subject. Perhaps a police call box? Go figure.
Essentially Everytown believes in registration, confiscation and more gun free zones. They want to make it so the ‘gun culture’ of protecting oneself isn’t as prominent as it is today. How? By forcibly taking away people’s firearms and putting more laws into place that make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to indeed protect themselves. They clearly don’t know the current laws, including an actual lawmaker, and want to add laws that already exist. Everytown proponents are clueless shills for Bloomberg who are such hoplophobes they don’t even realize how asinine their own talking points sound.
NOTE: Representative Berrien sponsored a bill in the New Hampshire Legislature that would “prohibit public employers from using criminal history in employment decisions.” The man doesn’t want women protecting themselves and wants to do everything he can to stop them while demanding public employers hire criminals that could potentially be rapists or violent offenders. This is the world of progressives and gun control addicts.
