With the college football regular season over, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit released his top four teams. Due to plenty of high profile games, the College Football Playoff picture got clearer, but it only sets the stage for Championship week. However, one of Herbstreit’s top four teams is done, and they seem like a lock for one of the College Football Playoff spots.
The Oklahoma Sooners dominated the Oklahoma State Cowboys on the road, and captured the Big 12 title. Unlike last season, the Sooners are the sole Big 12 champs. Currently, the Sooners are Herbstreit’s No.3 team, but they still have a chance to move up next week.
The rest of the field has a pivotal game next week. In the ACC, the Clemson Tigers will face the North Carolina Tarheels. As 1 of 2 undefeated teams in college football, the Tigers are a win away from securing the No.1 spot. However, the Tigers are in a must-win situation like every other team vying for a title shot.
The Tarheels have one 11 straight games, but they aren’t in Herbstreit’s top four. In fact, they aren’t even mentioned with the top teams. Could an ACC champion be left out of the College Football Playoff?
In the SEC, the Alabama Crimson Tide earned their conference title shot as well. Their match up with the Florida Gators lost a little bit of luster, but still remains intriguing. The Gators suffered their second loss of the season to Florida State, but they have a chance to wreak havoc on the College Football Playoff selection committee.
The Michigan State Spartans also made the cut in Herbstreit’s Top 4. The Spartans won the Big Ten East and will face the other undefeated team in college football. The Iowa Hawkeyes ran the table, and are a win away from earning a spot in the College Football Playoff.
