The 2015 Pan American Games (boxing) performance by Team USA in Toronto, Canada, was an outstanding effort by all but there was controversy when following the defeat of American female flyweight Marlen Esparza at the hands of Canada’s (host country) Mandy Bujold, Esparza let loose with an ill-thought tirade that was captured on LIVE TV.
When asked about her thoughts of the fight, Esparza responded “It was bullshit” and when later asked what experience she could take from these games, she said “I still don’t like Canadiens”.
That comment brought a flood of criticism the way of Esparza, who should have known better, and yesterday afternoon she issued an apology.
‘I want to apologize for my statement on Saturday night after my loss at the Pan American Games. I let the crowd and my emotions get the better of me in that highly charged moment and I misspoke. I truly do apologize. I want to let everyone know that inadvertent statement does not reflect my values, my sportsmanship, or my country’.
Kudos to Marlen Esparaza for understanding the possible ramifications her passionate, ill-timed rant following a bitter defeat could cause during her effort to earn that gold medal she so desires in the 2016 Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
For those feeling the Esparza comments in Toronto ‘not that big a deal’, understanding ‘the politics of boxing’ (and the way most every country in the world views the USA) made the Esparza comments indeed ‘that big a deal’, gaining world-wide attention.
Hopefully the statement released by Marlen Esparza can put this issue to rest.
