Los Angeles Zombie Examiner Vicki got a chance to go through one of the 3 (soon to be 4) rooms at Escape Room LA and got out before the time limit was up! Well, to be honest the team got out! Teamwork is a huge part of this fun experience! Knowing only one other person on the team of 15 made it a little more challenging, but we all made it! The year round escape experience Escape Room LA has participants using their heads, not losing them.
Located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, Escape Room LA has thrilled participants since 2014 with their live-action escape games, The Detective, The Cavern and The Theatre. Opening soon is The Alchemist, with a brand new room, story line and puzzles. LA Zombie Examiner joined a group in The Theatre experience and was amazed at the hard but doable puzzles, clever story line and how a group of strangers can come together to work as a team. Unfortunately I can’t tell you anything about the room (that would spoil it for others) or the ghost from The Theater would have to come and kill me! Just know that whether you want a fun date night, a party with 15 of your closest friends, or a work team-building activity, you will not be disappointed. After my experience I asked Escape Room LA a few questions.
Los Angeles Zombie Examiner: Thank you so much for the opportunity to be a part of such a fun game. Please describe Escape Room LA to the readers.
Escape Room LA: “Similar to a real-life video or adventure game, Escape Room LA immerses participants in a mysterious location with an equally mysterious series of tasks, all of which must to solved in order to escape. Pieces to the puzzle fit together and little by little, the mystery of the room starts to unravel.”
ZE: Escape Room LA has been open since 2014. What motivated you to start an escape room and where do you come up with the ideas?
ERLA: “Escape rooms have been popular in Asia and Europe for quite some time, but only very recently in the US. I first read about one in Budapest, Hungary in Spring 2004 and thought it was the coolest thing ever. Because our company (Race/LA) creates outdoor adventure races & scavenger hunts which involve solving clues and puzzles, it seemed like the perfect activity for us to take on next. At the time there was nothing like this in LA. Now there are maybe a dozen, although we are still by far the largest and most popular.”
ZE: Any interesting or funny story?
ERLA: “We made a semi-celebrity out of one of our staff members, Laura. She was a fresh-faced newcomer to LA from the Midwest when she started working here. A few months in, The Conan O’Brien Show came to tape a segment in our “Detective” room and Laura worked in the room that day. Next thing she knew, she was featured on national television and to this day still has people coming up to her saying “I saw you on Conan, could I get a photo with you?!” (You can see the video on the Escape Room LA website.)
So you have a better idea of what the rooms have to offer, here is the synopsis for each experience.
The Theatre: Enter the stage door of an old haunted theatre, where you’ll have one hour to free the ghost or be trapped in the theatre forever. As you explore the backstage and dressing rooms, you’ll uncover clues and puzzles that will lead you to the objects you need to create a magical spell and release the ghost before your time runs out.
The Detective: Step back in time into the world of a 1940s private detective. Inside the detective’s office, you’ll find yourself trapped in a film-noir style Hollywood mystery where you must work together to identify suspects, solve challenging puzzles and clues and find a way out of the room.
The Cavern: You’re sent on an expedition in search of a lost civilization’s ancient mysteries, hundreds of feet below the surface of downtown Los Angeles. After arriving in a mysterious underground cavern, you’ll have less than an hour to uncover the secrets and escape before your air supply runs out.
The Alchemist: (opening soon) An ancient library leads you through a secret passage and into a medieval alchemist’s mysterious lab. You must escape before the alchemist returns, but the only way out is to uncover and unite the four lost elements, releasing the hidden powers of the mystical Philosopher’s Stone.
