Friday, June 12, Erislandy Lara (20-2-2) will defend his WBA super welterweight title against Delvin Rodriguez (28-7-4) at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois. The bout is part of the new fight series, Premier Boxing Champions and will be televised on Spike TV.
For Lara, the match up is an opportunity to continue upon his momentum after defeating Ishe Smith (26-7) for a world title. Lara, who defected from Cuba, has big plans to take part in a mega fight within the very near future. Therefore, it is imperative that he put on an impressive performance against Rodriguez,
Odds wise, according to Bovada.lv, Lara is highly favored at -10000 and Rodriguez at +1600. Thus, it is evident that not many people are giving Rodriguez much of a chance.
Even more, Rodriguez is coming off a draw to Joachim Alcine (35-7-2) in a bout that he was expected to easily win. As a result, it seems Rodriguez is on the downside and will need to put together his most impressive performance in order to pull off the upset.
In the end, it is no secret that Friday’s match up has been positioned to place Lara in mega fight conversations against some of boxing’s elite. However, he must first get past Rodriguez who can never me underestimated. Anything outside of a lopsided victory for Lara would be a disappointment in the eyes of the boxing world.
