Currently available on Netflix instant is 2012’s most recent adaptation of the cult classic ‘Berserk’ manga series – ‘The Golden Age Arc 1: The Egg of the King,’ which plays out a very condensed version of 1997’s ‘Berserk’ anime series that includes 25 episodes and tells the story of Guts, a loner swordsman who gets mixed up with and recruited by Griffith, the head of the relentless mercenary team The Band of The Hawk. Griffith “recruits” Guts after observing a vicious bout between he and a very powerful enemy. As the story goes own, Guts proves his value and earns the respect of the other Hawks in Griffith’s path to glory. The story takes a very unexpected and macabre turn that catches everyone off guard and sets up future installments.
To those existing fans of the series, Arc 1 is a quick refresher, but really does not go into detail with any of the minor characters or even into much of the conflict between the main three.
So for new audiences, it is highly recommended that you either wait for the later installments to be released (currently available on Amazon Instant Video) or you can purchase the original series (also at Amazon).
Regardless of which you choose, the Berserk series is a very dark, entertaining and original Japanese story about Medieval Europe; truly a must see.
