Emma Sulkowicz has a new message. Sulkowicz, the former Columbia University student best known for lugging around an anti-rape “protest mattress,” is back in the news with her latest attempt to jolt individuals and draw attention to her platform of sexual abuse. She’s created a consensual sex tape – showing what a rape may look like.
Writes the NY Daily News: “Emma Sulkowicz, 22, is seen whimpering in pain and protest in the disturbing footage as an anonymous man slaps her, chokes her and rips off his condom before forcing her into having rough sex in a dorm room.”
The video, carried on a website Sulkowicz created called Ceci N’est Pas Un Viol (French for “This Is Not Rape”), is a powerful yet disturbing way to highlight campus rape. Sulkowicz says when she was a sophomore at Columbia, she was raped. She said she would carry her performance art “burden” until the campus expelled her alleged rapist.
In September of last year, we carried that story:
Emma Sulkowicz: Rape victim hauls ‘protest’ mattress until rapist is expelled
The accused student was never expelled. A 2013 college inquiry revealed he was “not responsible” in the allegations Sulkowicz brought against him. Sulkowicz then filed a formal police complaint in May 2014, but no charges were brought forth because of a lack of credible evidence or suspicion. In April of this year, the accused filed a lawsuit against the university for not protecting him and his reputation.
Emma gives an oddly worded “trigger warning” on her website:
The following text contains allusions to rape. Everything that takes place in the following video is consensual but may resemble rape. It is not a reenactment but may seem like one. If at any point you are triggered or upset, please proceed with caution and/or exit this website. However, I do not mean to be prescriptive, for many people find pleasure in feeling upset.
The majority of comments left on her website however are blasting her “art,” calling it “perverse” and “disgusting.”
A sampling of the comments:
So you wanted to do porn, but you had to falsely accuse a man of rape and make yourself look like a victim so you would have some kind of “trauma” to latch onto so you could claim this is some kind of artistic project when it’s really just porn?
This is an attention whore whose 15 minutes were rapidly coming to a close. She needed to keep it going somehow, and this is what she came up with. Desperate and pathetic.
This woman (is it OK to use such gender-normative terminology?) needs some serious psychiatric assistance.
What do you think about Emma Sulkowicz and her performace anti-rape art?
