The basic building blocks of elements are invisible to the unaided eye. Elements are anyone of the known kinds of basic chemical substances. All chemical substances are either elements or compounds (combination of two or more elements). For example, hydrogen and oxygen are elements, and water as a compound of hydrogen and oxygen. There are 92 natural occurring elements, all the rest are artificially made by man. All these elements except some of the artificially created ones are found on or in the earth.
The atom, is the smallest particle of matter that has distinct chemical characteristics. Everything around you and in you are made up of extremely tiny atoms. Your body is a complicated organized collection of billions and billions of atoms. Atoms are so tiny that they can be seen only with powerful electron microscopes. the atom consists of a nucleus which consists of several different kinds of particles, packed closely together. The basic particles of the nucleus are protons and neutrons. There are other particles within this nucleus called neutrinos, mesons, and hyperons. The rest of the atom is mostly empty space dotted with super tiny, almost weightless, negative electrical charges called electrons. The easiest way to picture an atom is to think of it as a miniature solar system. the nucleus of the atom corresponds to the sun and the electrons the planets in the solar system.
We have 92 naturally occurring elements with simplest one beginning with hydrogen with an atom consists of a nucleus made up of one proton and one electron that spins around this nucleus. The most complex atom found in nature is the element uranium. It is also the heaviest atom with a nucleus of 92 protons and 146 neutrons with 92 electrons arranged in seven shells around the nucleus. From uranium they made artificial atoms by adding to uranium 238. These elements are very unstable and highly radioactive substances. They have made highly enriched uranium which was used in atomic and hydrogen bombs. We need to find peaceful uses for atomic energy and not for use as weapons of mass destruction. I do not believe God intended us to split the atom and use for weapons of war. Actually United States has been the only country to use such weapons, when we bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, to end the war with them.
Lets think about the water we have on this planet which is essential for life to be sustained. Without it in abundance our planet would look similar to the moon. A single drop of water contains more than 33 billion billion molecules. Each of these molecules are made up of three atoms, two hydrogen and one oxygen. So each drop of water thus contains more than 99 billion billion atoms. God knew we needed water when He created the elements. Water is the only element that can be a vapor, liquid or solid. That is amazing that two gases (hydrogen and oxygen) can make a stable, solvent, liquid that we can drink to survive. Thank you God, for such an amazing compound called water. The elixir of life!
Hebrews 11:3 says, “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” The invisible part of matter which cannot be seen is what makes up matter that we do see and that is the atoms (elements) that God created.
