It is like nothing else. Sure there are plenty of engaging musicals in the theatre and comedy is no stranger to the stage. Farce and parody are ever present elements of theatrical presentation as is an introduction into various languages and cultures. But there is nothing else on stage today as utterly entertaining and riveting and unique as ‘el Grande CIRCUS de Coca Cola’ currently at the Colony Theatre. So the question begs, what is it exactly?
Well, there is music – some. And there is comedy to be sure and in abundance. Also most of the language spoken from the stage is Spanish but oddly that is not a problem even for a mainly mono-linguistic guy like me. It is plenty of sight gags and a steady stream of unvarnished humor. It is also a wee bit sexy and yes it truly is its very own special form of a circus.
‘el Grande CIRCUS de Coca Cola’ is the creation of playwright and world adventurer Ron House whose life’s adventures include fluency in five languages having been a member of Second City and founder of Low Moan Spectacular a London underground theatre company that was instrumental in the creation of the massive hit ‘Bullshot Crummond.’ ‘el Grande de Coca Cola’ first came to light at the intimate [99 seat] Skylight Theatre in Los Angeles where it ran for fourteen sold out weeks generating scores of rave reviews. Now it has arrived at the magnificent Colony Theatre in beautiful downtown Burbank where it shall run at least until December 13th.
So the story goes a family of entertainers has spent years touring and performing in hundreds of dives and gin joints from Panama City to Tijuana. Finally they get their big break and take their show to world renowned Burbank, California home of Walt Disney and IKEA. Now the burden is on Pepe Hernandez to bring his family to a level of international stardom. And so begins just shy of 90 hilarious minutes of pure raw entertainment as ‘el Grande CIRCUS de Coca Cola’ unfolds before your riveted eyes filling your heart and mind with laughter and joy. The cast includes Ovation Award winning Marcello Tubert as ‘Pepe;’ actor, writer, musician Paul Baird as ‘Miguel;’ classically trained and beautiful Olivia Cristina Delgado as ‘Maria;’ Columbia University graduate and also a true beauty Lila Dupree as ‘Consuelo’ and supremely humble and greatly talented Aaron Miller as ‘Juan.’
It is truly unique, it is wild, insane and just plain pure captivating fun; it is ‘el Grande de Coca Cola’ and you can enjoy it now through December 13th at The Colony Theatre, 555 North Third Street, Burbank, California.
