An 8-year-old boy is charged with murder, and the chilling details of the brutal murder of 1-year-old Kelci Lewis are shocking authorities and the public alike. Kelci died from severe head trauma and major internal organ damage because she didn’t stop crying.
As reported by Alabama.com on November 11, the 8-year-old Birmingham boy who is being charged with murder is the son of a friend of Kelci’s mom, Katerra Lewis. Apparently, while Katerra and her only child Kelci were waiting for Section 8 housing of her own, they were staying with her friend and her five children, ages 2, 4, 6, 7, and the 8-year-old boy.
According to Birmingham Police Department spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards, 26-year-old Katerra and her friend went out partying at a nightclub on the evening of October 10, leaving all children in the care of the 8-year-old boy who is now being accused of murder. When Kelci started crying and didn’t stop, the boy took care of the situation.
“We did have some information that the 8-year-old got extremely agitated because the 1-year-old refused to stop crying and so I guess the 8-year-old took it upon himself and began to commit violent acts against the 1-year-old,” said Lt. Edwards and added that “investigators are still struggling to process how an 8-year-old could even have ‘that much evil in his heart’ to kill the little girl.”
Kelci’s mom and her friend were reportedly gone from 11:30 p.m. until 2 a.m. According to police reports, the 8-year-old put the injured 1-year-old back in her crib after viciously beating her. By the time Katerra finally checked on her 1-year-old daughter the next morning, she was found “unresponsive in her crib at 10:45 a.m.”
By the time police were called to the home on Second Avenue South it was too late. Kelci was taken to Children’s of Alabama where she was pronounced dead at 11:07 a.m. According to Lt. Edwards, “if the mother had checked on her child when she got home, police would have probably arrived earlier and with medical help, there’s a chance that Kelci’s death could have been prevented.”
The 8-year-old Alabama boy who is being charged with murder is in the custody of the Department of Human Resources. In Alabama, there is no set minimum age for prosecution in juvenile court and he could be sentenced to juvenile prison until up to age 21 if found guilty. The other children who were at the home that night and reportedly witnessed the brutal beating have been removed from their mother and might also be facing charges. Katerra Lewis is charged with manslaughter but was released from Jefferson County Jail on Monday after posting $15,000 bond.
While the 8-year-old boy is being charged with murder, Kelci’s mother has already earned $1,185 on her GoFundMe page created on October 12 – just one day after her little girl’s death.
