Emmy award-winning Amazon Studios has released their 2015 pilot season. During pilot season, Amazon customers get the chance to shape Amazon’s programming lineup. Amazon gives Amazon Prime customers the opportunity to watch pilot episodes of potential series, and let Amazon know how they liked the shows, and if they’d like to see them turned into series. This season Oscar-nominated animation studio Cartoon Saloon has created an animated fairy adventure story called “Eddie of the Realms Eternal.”
Eddie is an unremarkable middle school student whose loving grandfather tells him wonderful fairy stories about the Realms Eternal. Eddie feels like he’s too grown up for fairy tales, though. At school, he’s a favorite victim of Heather, a bully who hangs out with the popular crowd. One day, after being picked on by Heather, Eddie’s world really goes down the drain when he’s sucked down a school toilet and through a portal into Fairy Land.
Hobi is an elf who’s also a rather scatterbrained would-be wizard. He regales the community with tales of his grandfather’s summoning of the great hero Edward Armstrong, and their defeat of the evil Shadow Queen. One day, word comes that the Shadow Queen has returned and is on the war path. The residents of the Realms Eternal turn to Hobi to save them. Unfortunately, Hobi has presented himself as a more experienced wizard than he really is. He performs a spell to summon Edward Armstrong, but what he gets is young Eddie. The inexperienced pair set out together to fight the Shadow Queen and her dark fairy minions.
“Eddie of the Realms Eternal” is written by Emmy Award winners Bill Motz and Bob Roth of “Penguins of Madagascar,” and produced by Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey, and Paul Young of Cartoon Saloon. The show features the same beautiful hand-drawn animation as their enchanting feature films “The Secret of Kells” and “Song of the Sea.”
An animated series of this caliber is rare these days. It’s truly a show that the whole family can enjoy, and because of the format, viewers can watch it wherever and whenever they like. It’s beautifully produced and animated. The writing is funny, but not dumbed down. It’s got fairies, action, and humor. Verdict: Watch it, take the survey after, and ask Amazon to select this show to be made into a regular series.
“Eddie of the Realms Eternal” is available to watch on Amazon Instant Video’s Amazon Pilot Season. Amazon Video can be accessed through the Amazon Video app on TVs, connected devices, and mobile devices, or online at Amazon.com/amazonvideo. Amazon Pilot Season and other Amazon shows are free to Amazon Prime members. After watching the show and taking the survey, head over to the official “Eddie of the Realms Eternal” Facebook page and they’ll provide a link to some special bonus material.
