According to the Bible the words “dragon” and “dragons” are real creatures that lived along with other creatures mentioned in the Bible. The translators of the King James Authorized Version of 1611 did not have the word “dinosaur” in their English vocabulary at the time of publication of the King James Bible.
People called these large land reptiles a variety of names in which one was dragons. There is a living specimen that is called a dragon, it is the Komodo Dragon that lives on Komodo Island and surrounding islands in the South Pacific near Borneo. Komodo Dragons are the world’s largest living lizard that can grow up to ten feet in length and weigh about 300 pounds. But they are not dinosaurs,
A multitude of dragon legends is found all over the world and throughout history. Dragons have also been reported by people such as Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.) who reported seeing a hissing dragon in a cave in India in 326 B.C. Marco Polo (!254-1324) was a traveling merchant from Venice which made exploratory trips into China, Persia, Burma and Tibet, documented in a book titled, “The Travels of Marco Polo”, about huge serpents or dragons that had short legs, claws and large jaws with sharp teeth. Other people who saw dragons were John of Damascus (675-749), Josephus (First century A.D.) and Herodotus (Fourth century B.C.) mentioned dragons or winged serpents in their writings. Native tribes especially in the Southwestern region of the United States made petroglyphs (carvings of stone) and pictographs (paintings on stone) occasionally showing creatures that strongly resemble dinosaurs. One petroglyph at Kachina Bridge in Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah appears to depict a sauropod dinosaur. There is a carving at the Ta Prohm Temple near the province of Siem Reapin, Cambodia that dates back to the 1100’s. It depicts a baby Stegosaurus, carved nearly 500 years before scientists discovered fossil bones of such a creature. The Chinese zodiac features 12 animals, including a dragon that is supposedly the only mythological creature used. But why does the Chinese zodiac depict a dragon, if they are not real? Or why has other nations that have used this zodiac system for thousands of years use 11 real animals such as the horse, rabbit and monkey and one “unreal” creature? The Chinese zodiac also features a snake, which shows that ancient people who developed this zodiac, know the difference between dragons and other reptiles. It is likely that they encountered dinosaurs in the past, called them dragons and included them on the zodiac.
The King James Bible mentions dragon and dragons in the Old Testament 22 times (dragon six times and dragons 16 times). In the New Testament the word dragon is mentioned 13 times all in the Book of Revelation (the dragon is used to describe Satan). A good choice of description for Satan, because the dragon would summon images of viciousness, and strength and other visual disturbing images of the adversary of the world. It makes sense to apply the image of a fierce, lethal, and fiery dragon to Satan, but only if it were a real comparison.
Why would God mention a mythical creature with real creatures? Dragons are real creatures that could of been dinosaurs. Recently they discovered a fossilized skull in South Dakota’s Hell Creek Formation that would look like a dragon if seen alive. The scientists named it “Dracorex hogwartsia” in honor of the school in J.K. Rowlings’ Harry Potter books.
The term “dragon” appears over 20 times in the Old Testament of the Bible, translated into English from the related Hebrews words “tannin” and “tannim”. These words can also be translated as “monster”. “serpent” and “sea monster”. Psalm 74:13 refers to sea dragons, which could have possibly meant swimming reptiles such as the plesiosaur or mosasaur. Isaiah 30:6 also mentions flying serpents or reptiles, possibly a pterosaur. While these are not dinosaurs according to modern definitions, Isaiah 34 in the King James Version mentions land dragons which were possibly dinosaurs.
