The Donald and The Pope. Donald Trump pondered a potential meeting with Pope Francis, and the GOP hopeful weighed in on a “warning” that he would give the Pope if Francis were to criticize capitalism when the pontiff visits the U.S. next month – ISIS is gonna get you.
Writes The Washington Post on Aug. 20: “The comment came when CNN’s Chris Cuomo presented Trump with a hypothetical situation during an interview Wednesday. What if, Cuomo said, Trump met the pope, and — through a translator — the pope expressed a belief that capitalism can be ‘a real avenue to greed, it can be really toxic and corrupt.’ How would Trump respond, Cuomo asked.”
The billionaire businessman – who is protestant but thinks Pope Francis is a “good guy” because he is becoming “very political” – said thinks the Sovereign of the Vatican City is a fan of capitalism, but in the off chance the Pope decides to bash the profit-making, private ownership economic system, Trump would have to get a little dirty.
“I’d say ISIS wants to get you,” Trump said. “You know that ISIS wants to go in and take over the Vatican? You have heard that. You know, that’s a dream of theirs, to go into Italy.” Cuomo, left speechless for a moment, then says, “You’re going to scare the Pope?”
“I’m gonna have to scare the Pope because it’s the only thing,” Trump said. “The Pope, I hope, can only be scared by God. But the truth is — you know, if you look at what’s going on — they better hope that capitalism works, because it’s the only thing we have right now. And it’s a great thing when it works properly. In our country Chris it has not been working properly.”
In the full interview, seen here from Politics and More, Donald dishes on UFC champ Ronda Rousey, stating that she’s part of his high-profile fans – despite the fact the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion already said she doesn’t want a reality star running the country.
Trump, speaking of his support for women serving in all facets of the armed forces, said, “some of them are really, really good. I’ll tell you what, I know some women that are just… Ronda Rousey is an example, who likes me. I’d take her on my side as a fighter.”
In July, Rousey talked about the republican candidate and said her vote would not be for the real estate mogul. “I mean, I wouldn’t vote for him,” she said. “I just really wouldn’t trust the guy with running my country, that’s all. I’m not really going to get into specifics of it, but, I mean, I don’t want a reality TV star to be running my country.”
Trump also spoke to Cuomo about his immigration plan, the Hillary Clinton email scandal and Jeb Bush.
Adds the Post: “The Vatican’s chief spokesman in January dismissed reports that terrorists might focus on the Vatican. In March, however, the head of the Vatican City police and security service said ‘the threat exists.’ He also noted that authorities didn’t know of a specific plot to attack either Pope Francis or the Vatican.”
