Leading Republican candidate for president Donald Trump blasted Mexico for what he considers the country’s hypocrisy over immigration. In an interview with conservative talk show host Michael Savage Wednesday, Trump said he supports strict voter identification and immigration laws similar to Mexico’s.
Savage has long been one of the media’s most vocal critics of illegal immigration. His show’s slogan is “borders, language and culture.” The San Francisco-based nationally syndicated talk show host told his listeners earlier in his show that he would ask Trump whether he would sign a presidential executive order making US voter laws as strict as Mexico’s. Savage noted that Mexican law requires a tamper-proof photo ID card with an embossed hologram and a thumbprint.
While Trump didn’t answer directly whether he would sign such an order, he told Savage, “Well you know something has got to be done, and I can’t believe it where they want to take away cards, they want to take away identification,
Trump continued, “I assume that means that means someone can vote ten times, ‘Who the hell is going to know the difference?’ “
“When you speak of Mexico,” Trump added, “I have so many people from Mexico who work for me, they are wonderful people, they are great people and I respect Mexico as a country. The problem is their leaders are too smart for our leaders They are very cunning and they are very smart and they are ripping off our nation like you have never seen.’
Trump told Savage that Mexico has a much harsher view of immigrants than the US does.
“Very interesting, if you want to become a citizen of Mexico, it is almost impossible, Trump said. “It is so rigorous, it is so hard to become a citizen. They put you through the grinder and you just can’t do it. And yet in our country, ‘boom,’ they walk right over the border and everybody has a good time and we pay for it whether it is in prisons or hospitals or anything. In California, almost fifty percent of the people applying for driver’s licenses are illegals.”
While not known for his understatements, Trump’s figures on illegal immigrants obtaining drivers licenses in California are higher than he stated. Earlier this month, the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles estimated that since the law went into effect in January that made it legal for illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses, 52% percent of all new drivers licenses issued in the state have gone to undocumented immigrants.
Trump told Savage he found it incredible that anyone would try to fight an ID requirement for voting.
The real estate magnate went on to tout his new polls which showed him well ahead in the Republican primary in Florida, surpassing both former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Florida Senator Marco Rubio.
Trump went on to blast the arms deal that the Obama administration made with Iran.
“It’s a disgrace and how (Obama) allows this to happen What we should have done is increase the sanctions, doubled them up and these people would have given us everything we wanted. It is such an embarrassment,” Trump said.
“If you look at Iran,” he continued, “they are going to be wealthy, they are going to be powerful, they are going to have nuclear weapons now … and there is probably going to be a nuclear proliferation all over the Middle East. It is one of the dumbest deals I have ever seen,” added Trump who authored the best-selling book, Art of the Deal.
Trump went on to slam the US trade deals with China.
Near the conclusion of the interview, Savage reiterated his support of Trump and criticized conservatives “purists” who don’t think Trump is conservative enough.
“You’re the standard barer. You are the only hope we have. You are the lion we have been waiting for. You are the Winston Churchill of our time and I pray to God you are in it for the long haul, “Savage told Trump.
