San Francisco Fleet Week is usually not a matter of news for classical music lovers in San Francisco. However, when a chamber music recital featuring a duo of oboe and piano is at stake, the roar of jet fighters becomes an issue. This year San Francisco Fleet Week will take place between Thursday, October 8, and Monday, October 12. On Thursday afternoon the Blue Angels will be practicing between noon and 4 p.m.; and there will be air shows between 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, all taking place above Marina Green.
For this reason the Dolci duo of oboist Ted Rust and pianist Viva Knight has announced that (in the words of both members) “it would be unfair to drown out their jet fighters with its oboe and piano.” As a result, the free performance at the San Francisco Senior Center at the Aquatic Park Center, which is located at 890 Beach Street, on October 9 has been cancelled. Regular readers know that this duo takes its name from the Italian word for the dessert course of a full meal. By beginning recitals at 1 p.m., Dolci performs after the tables have been cleared from the low-cost nutritious lunch served regularly to the seniors that visit the Aquatic Park Center. The updated schedule for the remainder of the Fall 2015 season of free concerts will be as follows:
October 16: a program of the emerging Romantic movement presenting music by Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann
October 23: an Italian Baroque program bringing Scarlatti together with Alessandro Marcello and Alessandro Longo, the early twentieth-century Italian musicologist, best known for cataloging the works of Scarlatti
October 30: scary music for Halloween
November 6: a program entirely of the music of Ludwig van Beethoven
November 13: an arrangement of Isaac Albéniz’ Opus 47 Suite española for oboe and piano
November 20: an arrangement of Schumann’s Opus 48 Dichterliebe (a poet’s love) song cycle for oboe and piano
