There are many pet friendly travel websites, apps and other tools for travelers bringing their pet along with them on their vacation. For Californians–or those planning trips to California with their dogs—one in particular stands out because it is devoted exclusively to the state.
Dogtrekker.com, whose tagline is “Have Dog, Will Travel” was created by Roxanne and Dave Kendrick after years of inspiration of trekking with their favorite four legged companions. Based in San Rafael, California, it was recently voted Best Dog-friendly Travel Website by Beast of the Bay Awards. The free app makes use of DogTrekker.com’s extensive database of over 12,000 listings and 1,200-plus travel articles to allow dog owners to plan dog-friendly trips throughout every city, county and region of California.
The mission through the site and weekly newsletter is to provide their readers with “countless ideas for dog-friendly adventures.” Additionally, they are passionate about supporting the efforts of rescue organizations and shelters and each week highlight a specific rescue or shelter in their newsletter.
Searches are easy by breaking down the state either regions, counties, or cities within its tabs. A search for dog friendly travel establishments can easily start by hitting the “Explore CA” button on the app, and then selecting your region. Listings pull up in categories such as Lodging, Dining, Water, Attractions, Parks, and Garden.
Once you find listings you want to save or remember, a quick click at the top of the page allows you to add the listing to your Favorites, which you can get to from the home page.
Within each listing, the app provides a description, contact information, and even the ability to map it to your devices GPS feature. The most important feature on the listing is the Dog Policy for the establishment, such as listing weight limits and/or dog fees for a particular lodging establishment.
“What makes DogTrekker’s app different is that veteran, professional travel writers and editors do the research and write the articles. Every hotel, restaurant, hike, beach and winery listed in the app has been researched, and most have been paw-tested,” Kendrick said. “This isn’t necessarily what the innkeeper says is dog-friendly. It’s what dog owners and experienced travelers certify to be what their dog experienced.”
Users can also open a map for online directions, add locations and listings to a favorite’s list, and enter to win DogTrekker.com’s monthly California “DogCation.” Their site also helps business be “dog passionate” by providing tips to businesses on how to be dog friendly and dog passionate, and lists dog friendly events throughout all parts of the state.
Including the Dog Trekker app on your phone and other mobile devices is an essential tool for anyone planning a trip with their dog in the state of California.
